Today the media is in a frenzy about resistance training and all of its beneficial affects. Those of us who have been ‘weight lifting’ for a long time already know about these benefits. We like to be stronger than normal and have our clothes ‘fit well’ so as to show off our power.

As I continue to work out it is abundantly clear to me why I do so. It is partly for better health but mostly it’s an ego thing; I like being stronger than the normal man my age or for that matter someone younger than me. It’s also so I can move stuff around and not have to call on a friend to give me a hand with it. After all who needs help moving a television or a chair when you know how to lift heavy stuff? Not me that’s for sure!

I like it when I can use my strength to lift the lawn mower off of a stump I’ve carelessly run over while mowing the outer reaches of our yard here in the country. Or, when some big rocks have to be moved out of the garden area or away from the shrubs. I can do it because of my years of lifting the weights.

When I had my knee replaced last July I was determined to spend as little time as possible in the hospital. The normal stay was three days. I knew I could be out sooner than that. I just had to concentrate on the ROM and tightening up the muscles around the joint so I could convince the doctor I was ready to go home. In a day and a half I was outa there. Good riddance I thought on the way home.

Healing at home is faster than being in a hospital with all those other poor orthopaedic people who are whining about their lack of pain medicine or not being able to turn their sorry asses over in bed. It is truly a matter of just doing it and moving on with your life no matter what the pain may be. If it hurts adjust to it but keep going. You won’t get better crying about it or not doing anything positive to improve your situation.

Oops, I sort of got off track there.

Back to the reasons I strength train. It has given me a chance to push myself where others may not have even considered going with their physical development. I am not a huge person, or one that will ever be featured in a muscle magazine but I am happy with how my life has went so far. And when the time comes to leave it I’ll be looking forward to what lies before me in the next chapter.
