Clenbuterol side effects: Rats! Clenbuterol may reduce, not enhance, performance, and stiffen heart muscles to boot

Clenbuterol is a popular - but banned - drug used by athletes in body-building, power-related, and even endurance sports. The chemical is attractive to athletes because it appears to have an anabolic effect on human muscles, and it may also increase fat metabolism. However, the actual effects of long-term clenbuterol intake on performance, muscle power, and overall health have been unclear.

To determine some of clenbuterol's actions, scientists at the University of Melbourne in Australia recently gave clenbuterol to laboratory rats at dosages of 2 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. Some of the rats followed a completely sedentary lifestyle, while others sprinted on treadmills or engaged in endurance swim training. Clenbuterol did have a couple of potentially positive effects: Sedentary rats which ingested clenbuterol had larger muscles than clenbuterol-free, sedentary rodents, and clenbuterol users also transformed leg-muscle cells from slow-twitch to fast-twitch fibres, a surprising change which would tend to increase anaerobic energy production and magnify muscle power during short, intense exertions.

However, clenbuterol also yielded three very negative changes. First, after just four weeks, clenbuterol-treated rats were unable to maintain their normal swimming or running training intensities, while clean rodents were quite capable of continuing. Secondly, the hearts of the clenbuterol-taking, trained rats increased dramatically in size compared to the hearts of sedentary rats, but the heart expansion was probably due to the infiltration of collagen fibres into the heart walls, not an increase in heart-muscle cells. Collagen is a tough connective tissue which doesn't augment heart-muscle power but in fact stiffens the heart, potentially leading to a decrease in cardiac output. Increases in collagen may also produce cardiac arrhythmias. Thirdly, clenbuterol rats suffered from noticeable cardiac-cell degeneration.

In addition, although sedentary, clenbuterol-treated rats were more muscular than clenbuterol-free, sedentary rats, clenbuterol was unable to boost muscle mass among either the swim- or treadmill-trained rodents. It appears that, in spite of its popularity, clenbuterol is a potentially dangerous drug which offers very few positive effects for either the power or endurance athlete.

These results cannot be related to humans.

This article raises many good questions about the safety of clenbuterol, but these results are skewed when relating to recreational use by a human. First off, these rats were given a dose of 2 mg/kg body wieght, now the average dose for a grown male is about 80-120 mcg a day, mcg not mg. In relation, I'm about 80kg, so in proportion to this study my dose would be about 160mg a day. The highest clen users take a dose that is about 0.1%, or 1/1000th of this size. Due to this insane amount of overdosage these results cannot prove that clen is dangerous. I have never taken clenbuterol and I am in no way an expert. I have no idea whether or not the use of clen is safe, but don't let this obsene excuse for an experiment sway you in either direction. No matter what substance you are considering taking, legal or not, always research the pros and cons, and don't be taken in by rediculous studies such as this one.

I currently train, light weight training. However I do enjoy cardio training. I am interested in finding out some information on Clenbuterol? I would like to loose body fat but maintain muscle. Is this a good idea to use this kind of drug and are the side effects long term harmful?

Clenbuterol - Can't find the answer to this question

Like Shellyd, I do cardio and light weight training. I don't eat meat (only fish) and I supplement protein with beans and shakes. I've read all the dosing advice and short and long term side effects of clenbuterol.

I'm trying to find out if you take Clen for just 4-6 weeks to get cut fat/increase muscle and don't want to ever take it again - will you automatically gain the weight back if you're continuing to workout and eat a low-carb diet?

In other words, keeping a good nutrition and exercise plan before, during, and after taking Clen, if you just want to take it once (one 4-6 week period) - will the stopping of the Clen alone cause you to gain the weight back?

Did you find your answers?

If so then good, if not I wanted to tell you about my experience. Which is all positive.

What a load of Hype

It always amazes me the lengths the media and "social experiments" will go to cause mass panic about something like Clen.

I am female. 36 and have been using Clen and the ECA stack since I was in my early 20's to increase my performance and lower body fat.

Used correctly, there is no harm done. I do get checked out regularly by my doctor. There are some side effects, of course, but they are totally manageable. The results are amazing and I mean who are we trying to kid...all those amazing body's out there and not natural, no matter what people might try and tell you!

I laugh when I see some "cut" person telling others how he eats 6 x a day and cuts out this and that. PLEASE!

I have been in the exercise industry since I was in my early teens and there has always been some performance enhancing drud doing its rounds. Some are dangerous. As Clen can be if abused.

Used properly its a tool, and IMO the benefits far outweigh the negatives. The experiments about hardening of the heart done on rats... well as niuh1989 said in a earlier post, the dosages were enormous! I have never taken more than 80 mcg at any time.

If the FDA and other governing bodies were just a little more awake, they could educate the population correctly, but instead they frighten the living daylights out of people and drive the product underground where there is no control and regulation of purity or dosage!

The fact of the matter is this, there is no miracle pill, as with anything you have to exercise, eat right and then use any advantage for that extra boost. Taking it solely to lose weight while sitting on the couch chomping potato crisps is a recipe for disaster!

The lady that said she's taken clen all her life was wrong when she said that all the well defined bodies out there were not achieved without drugs. I for one is cut to the max, lean and have never ingested anything unatural. I have beenworking out hard for the past five years and eat south eastern Nigerian foods plus GNC's mega men. I wish she stops ecouraging drug use. Please keep our sports clean.

I need a good advice...

about clen

sprsawyer's picture

i used clen about a year ago. i used the tablets. the tablets i received came in 10 microgram doses. from my understanding the average adult can take up to 1microgram per kilogram of bodyweight....but i never exceeded about 80 micrograms. when i was on i lost 60lbs of bodyweight in 4 months. within that 4 months i had quit smoking and with the aid of the clen i was able to lose weight instead of gain.
i would go to the gym 5 to 6 days a week, warm up for 5 min, do my weight training (one muscle group a day), do 20 min of cardio, work my abs, then finish with 10 min of hard cardio and a 5 min cool down.

unfortunately some financial stress put myself and my wife into a bit of a depression for a little while. i gained about 20lbs of fat back because i stopped going to the gym.

now i am on a strict diet. 5 meals a day, 2 protein shakes a day, cardio before breakfast for 45 min. three days a week, workout for 2hrs five days a week with 45 min. of cardio included, and yoga + abs three nights a week two to three hours before bed.

i am not currently on the clen, but i am ordering some. i am going to order the injection this time. it's supposed to be a little more potent from the pill or the pump.

The only side effects i ever got from the clen was increased weight loss, the ability to breathe better, and increased strength and endurance.

any questions feel free to ask, i'm not an expert but i do my research.

Well, I have done the math and the dose they gave the rat was so massive I'm surpirsed his heart didn't just pop. This article is totally misleading. I have never taken clen but I have seen the effects of it in some guys and ladies that train with me, and it's amazing. No weight loss but body fat drops fast. They look like different people now. I've heard, however, if you start to experience flu-like symptoms stop taking it immediately.

As I know Clenbuterol is a prescription drug. It is a bronchodilator which means it is given to patients to improve bronchial airflow. It is commonly prescribed to asthmatics and for many other illnesses which cause breathing difficulty.
