Peak Performance fitness training survey shows you don’t need the gym for sports training
Peak Performance polled 3800 athletes to ask about their sports training and found that 38% of our members don’t use a gym for their fitness training.

ABSOLUTELY
Fitness issues such as conditioning and rotational torque around joints are not significantly tested when the individual plugs themself into a CV machine. More plyometric and aceleratory/deceleratory conditioning is best done with bodyweight alone.
Dynamic strength training will always give better functional strength than static weights. Maybe the kettlebell generation is not a bad thing!
But hey lets do it outside or in space, not a crowded gym which limits you to what execise you can do.

Your work out must be creative! When it comes to sports I like to simulate what I am going to see and do on the field.

Resistance Training a Necessity
I think that we have to go with the experience of those athletes who have now proven that the gym has a lot to offer any sports person no matter what sport.
Regarding plyometrics and any sport's specific resistance exercises sure it's is obvious that basic resistance (weight) training in a necessity before even thinking about this type of training. If not one could do great damage to the muscles.
Many think that because they don't use a particular part of their body in their sport that they don't need to train it. This is poor thinking; everyone is as strong as his or her weakest part.
After saying all this there is no doubt gyms do need to give themselves a shake and employ staff who has a genuine interest in training, train themselves and keep up with the latest methods and after trying them out themselves bring them to the gym.
I do karate but I use the gym 5-8 times a week for weight training and body conditioning.
