I have seen references to Tabata training on this web site where exercising at 170% of VO2max is discussed.

Surely this is impossible ?

What I think they mean is that for a very short period of time the athlete was working at a pace or a power that was 1.7 times the pace or power that correlates with VO2max.

What do others think ?

From Mark on Facebook, 'No idea on the claims, but would consider the training method leaves you quite prone to overtraining related issues, also are the gains short term gains at the expense of longer term fitness and health? Phil Maffetone' books have some interesting views on VO2max and tests.'
