I have been told that when completing a bicep curl, on the essentric movement the tricep comes into play is this correct and if so why.

I was always led to beleive that opposite musles work together, is that true when using weights

From Margaret on our Facebook page, 'muscles have to work together to do their job, its a team effort...agonist & antagonist'.

And this from Antonio, 'Muscle balance is really important to Improve Body mechanics and structural alignment. I like doing Fullbody circuit with Push exercises alternateing with pull exercises.'

When you contract your bicep your triceps gets a slight stretch. If you lower slow on the eccentric contraction your triceps will come into play to control the weight as you lower it. Opposing muscle groups do work together during weight training in this way; during a bicep curl the contracting muscle shortens and the opposing muscle lengthens or stretches. Other stabilizing muscles are also used during most exercises using free weights (not so much on machines). Hope this helps.
