Eight weeks ago My son broke his leg. Just today he got his cast off. The Doctor doesn't have him on any Physio. She wants to see him again in three weeks. He has about seven weeks left in his football season. She is saying he won't play. This seems excessive to me. The look on my boys face when she said that broke my heart. Am I being cavalier? What time frame would you recommend?

Hiya Brad. I'm sorry to hear

Hiya Brad. I'm sorry to hear about your son's injury and that you haven't had any replies yet. I've popped your question on our Facebook page so someone might possibly reply on there instead. I can imagine how disappointed your son was to hear he'd miss the rest of this season :(

Depends on what sort of break it was Brad and if your son was a 'good' or 'bad' healer. Normal time frames for collagen repair is 8 weeks and then you have to build strength back into the limb and ensure tracking and patterns of movement are safe and sound that can normally take three to four weeks depending on how well and how often he trains.

The raw fact though is that for a period after a break you at higher risk of re-injurying not necessary another break but something else.

Be very supportive to him. Tell him that injuries are often part of contact sports and that how he manages his behaviour and attitude whilst rehabilitating will have a big bearing on how well and how soon he comes backs.

broken leg with bad calf to heal within 7week is like expecting magic to happen. let your boy rest the affected area to prevent further damage to the affected area and wait to see the pysio for help. healing comes gradual.

isn't it?

Unfortunately even if he was playing at a professional level with the support those players have he wouldn't be able to get back to playing as quickly as he'd like. The disappointment of injury recovery is just part of any keen sportspersons life - all you can do is support him and be realistic.

I think you do need to try

I think you do need to try and keep him off it as per consultant's orders. Presumably he will be sent to physio after the next follow-up visit - why not talk to the physio and see what he/she advises? I think you will hear the same story to be honest. kids heal quickly, but re-starting football too soon is really not worth the risk of further injury, that might put him out for next season as well.
