Let's hope I didn't miss the birthday!

ingredients; oil for brushing, 175g soft margarine, 175g caster sugar, 150g self-raising flour, 25g cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate!), 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 3 eggs. For the topping: 25g butter, 100g dark chocolate, 25g icing sugar, 2-3 teaspoons milk.

Oven on to 180 deg c, 350 deg f, gas mark 4.

Brush square tin (8 inch) with oil, line with greasproof paper, brush that with oil. Put everything into a mixing bowl, beat with a wooden spoon, put into the tin and smooth flat.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until it is well risen, brown, and springs back when pressed.

Leave it to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then loosen and turn out (preferably in one piece) leave on a wire rack, remove paper.

Make frosting;

Heat butter in a saucepan until just melted, break in the chocolate in squares, heat gently until melted. Stir in the icing sugar and heat gently until glossy - stir in enough milk to make a spreadable icing. Spread onto cake in an even layer.

It's never failed - is easy to make - but would mean you would need to work off quite a few of those calories Matt mentions.
