Hi Allun
A dorsal wrist ganglion is a cyst arising from the the capsule of a joint or the sheath of a tendon. Generally, these are harmless and will often disappear over time. There is often no identifiable trigger for a ganglion although they are quite common amongst gymnasts who clearly apply a certain amount of repeated stress to their wrists (this may therefore explain your son’s ganglion).
I would suggest a visit to the GP to confirm the best strategy but generally there are 4 options:
(1) Wait and watch – it may spontaneously disappear.
(2) Immobilisation – a GP may advise a wrist brace/splint – this may allow the ganglion to decrease in size. The GP may then advice exercises to strength the wrist and to work on range of motion.
(3) Aspiration – if your son is really struggling with movement and levels of pain then having the ganglion drained of fluid may provide relief.
(4) Surgical removal of the ganglion – although this is no guarantee that it will not grow back.
Hope this helps.
