England football star David Beckham is out of the 2010 World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon. The current AC Milan midfielder is likely to be out of action for around six months, although he will be hoping for a swifter return following a successful operation in Finland.

Beckham will now spend up to 8 weeks on crutches before beginning rehabilitation, which will centre on a very gradually progressed strengthening programme for the Achilles tendon and calf muscles under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The strengthening programme is likely to use eccentric muscle work, which means that the muscle is lengthening while contracting.

It is likely that Beckham will be unable to run at his full potential for another five months, depending on how he reacts to the recovery programme.
