Hi,
I am a 56 year old female - I used to be a Fitness Instructor with a passion for running and hitting the gym. I have 3 teenage children who use up a lot of my time taking them to and from their extra curricular activities. In particular my 14 yr old son who is an age group swimmer. I have an early start to day as I take him to swim training at 5.45am each day. After work I go to the gym roughly 4-5 times a week but with no
goal in mind other than to keep fit. I am at a stage whereby I need a new challenge in my life such as taking up running again. Is there anyone else in the same situation. Is it possible at 56 to start a running training regime again and what motivational factors are most effective i,e, what should my short term goals be. I would be most grateful for any advice or encouragement.

Hello there and welcome to the forum. I would say it's never too late to start, but the important thing would be to start small and build up. It sounds as though you are quite fit anyway so that will help.

The only thing I would say is invest in a really good supportive/ cushioning pair of shoes. I think I'm right in saying that as women our bones can become less dense and we need to take more care with activities that are higher impact like running. Thats not to say we CAN'T do these activities, just that a little extra care is sometimes needed.

Oh- and good for you! Do let us know how you are getting on.

What do you do whilst your son is swimming?

could that be time that you could utilise to train for yourself?

I don't think age should ever be a barrier to any sort of fitness activity, it's just about being careful.

How about aiming at a half marathon?

A half-marathon or even a 5K

A half-marathon or even a 5K would be a good short-term goal to aim for, and i second ElectronBlue's suggestion to get the very best running shoes you can possibly find. Are you only interested in running again, or would you be interested in taking up a new sport, perhaps?
