In the article titled "
Intense Training Versus Volume Training
: A new German study confirms that increasing intensity works better than upswings in volume." found on this site it promotes intensity over increases in mileage. In this study the increased mileage group in my opinion did not accurately represent the training of a high mileage group. In my expeirences in distance running high mileage is supposed to create fatigue in runners and decrease performance in the short term. After this period the training yields benefits and after tapering these benefits are compounded. I do not necessarily believe that high mileage training works better than a training program developed around intensity. However, I do want to know if these ideas were implemeneted in real training programs how they would influence performance. If anyone knows of any conclusive about the advantages of these training philosophies that factored in the points I discussed could you direct me to that source. Thanks. Steve

Intensity vs Volume training

Hi Steve - these answers from our Facebook group:
Duncan says, 'Intensity often used to build strength/power and speed which by necessity is shorter in duration. High mileage us good for base building/ endurance and tempo. Both have their place in race preparation and overall fitness.'
Martin adds, 'i think the best way is high intensity & high volume :-). Consider 10K runner Shalane Flanagan: her 'brick laying' workout [as her coach dubs it] consists of 6 x 2 miles repeats at 5:30-5:20 per mile pace with 90 sec recovery. That's her ha...lf-marathon pace; thus she's able to cover 91% of half-marathon distance in a single workout; and that's pretty tough! if she can cover 91% of half-marathon distance in a single workout, how much she does at 10K pace, 5K pace, 3K pace? My guess: A LOT!See more'
More from Duncan, 'Steve, if you're looking for pure statistical data to support the efficacy of high intensity vs volume training the best source would be the 'Olympic coaches journal' (sorry don't know if their online). However it needs to be said that to f...ind definitive proof of the validity of both forms of training you need look no further than any training plan for ANY pofessional/world class runner. I dubt you will find a single athlete who does not incooperate both modalities into their training, and I'm sure they wouldn't waste their time and energy doing either if they didn't gain benefit.'
Hope this helps,
M.
