Hi Owen,
If you are quite new to training, then I would caution against too high intensity intervals too early, or risk potential over strain injuries such as shin splints etc.
A very important factor in assisting you to stay injury free throughout your training is to carry out an appropriate programme of strength and conditioning work with weights. You will not end up looking like Arnie in his prime, and resistance work is such a vital component in helping to condition ones muscular skeletal system. Remember any endurance event is as much about this, at it is about cardiorespiratory fitness.
Rest is vital in ensuring progress and its whilst resting that adaptation occurs and not as many people think during training itself. Therefore ensuring you get adequate rest between training is vital, and one should never try to train if any hint of DOMS is present.
Additionally ensure you remain adequately hydrated at all times especially whilst training. If it is a hot day (rare at this time of the year) consider some sort of electrolyte replacement drink over just water.
Finally try to ensure you attempt to cover the distance of your planned event within about 6-8 weeks of commencing your training to ensure you are both physically and mentally conditioned for such.
Many people have spent a large amount of time dramatically improving their fitness without actually finding out if they are able to physically/mentally undertake such as long event as a marathon.
