I was reading the thread about how much is too much and two members posted about their cycle commute. It struck me that as a VERY rural dweller that wouldn't be open to me as a commute - it's too dark, and far too dangerous. But if I lived in the city it would be more of an option.

I wondered among our seriously training members if more people lived in the city? - with the opportunities of clubs, associations, classes and facilities - and how our more rural members adapted their training to the lack of support?

We have endless walking nearby - but not much else without a drive.

If you live rurally what training do you undertake to make the most of your environment?

Hi Corris,

See that you were reading my thread by the looks of it! Now although I probably don't live in such as rural area as you seem to make your out to be, but none the less, I'm surrounded by fields, hills, and forests. And still I cycle everywhere, mainly due to the fact its lit up well to the area, but even when the street lights go I still have the lights on my bike!

Other things I do fitness wise, is of course mountain biking, brilliant where I am, as well as going for a run up the hills (not quite mountains but still quite big) which if you look into the science is quite good for you aerobically. You'd be surprised how much there is to do really if you just look. We also have a dry slope ski centre down the road, still in true rural area!

Also for me, a rugby player as my main sport most clubs are in rural areas, so I'm not effected so much by this! And the club has a small gym too!

I'd say although you don't have the access to the sports clubs, there is still a great amount of things to do! You'd just need to adapt them slightly, like go running with a high vis jacket, and head torch if you don't like the dark! I think it really depends what sort of village you live in. A lot of sporting activities happen in my area! but then again, the next town over has nothing!

hope that helps
Alex

I can see why it would be

I can see why it would be harder- it's more of a making opportunities specifically thing isn't it, rather than simply rolling up at the local gym.

and very much in

the outdoors, rather than the dry air conditioning.
