Hi All!
Can one start lifting weights without prior cardio workout? Currently my cardio workouts come from 45 minutes of briskwalk/slow jog and stationary biking. There are days when time is tight..and I would like to know whether it's ok to weight train without subjecting the body to aerobic activity first?
I would also like to know whether it's ok to add a table spoon of glucose to the 1.5 lit of water I drink during my 2 hr work out?
On the progress side of things I'm lifting heavier weights at higher reps; i've added more exercises to my original 5 types a day; and have learnt not to say "toned" but instead, say "losing fat and adding more lean muscle!".

Hey Dr. Sunshine,
I'm a firm believer in beginning a strength training program before adding in the cardio! From a beginners point of view it is easier for them to perform a light strength session and see progress than to get on a t-mill and run for 45 minutes right off the bat.
I also believe that a proper strength training program can be set up to include cardio so that you don't have to perform 2 seperate workouts. I helped a client design a simple program where he did absolutely no typical cardio workouts. Instead he did all strength training with a few bouts of high intensity running, jump rope, stair climbing, etc. thrown in and he lost over 100 pounds.
On the other hand, you can go to any gym in the world and see people that do hours and hours of nothing but cardio work and their shape never changes.
Remember, in order to change the shape of your body you have to change the shape of your muscles.
As usual, I hope that answered some of your questions and raised even more. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at

Hi Coach Dan!
Thank you very much for your reply. One more myth broken..!
I dont go to the gym, but instead we have a basic Weider bench, bar bells and dumbbells at home. Most of my exercises involve dumbbells and also floor exercises for ab training. And I've been consistently exercising for the last 3 years.
I do cardio mainly to burn fat-I have problem spots on the tummy and also the trap/lat/rhomb area..and it was drummed into me that cardio burns while weights define..and that, and only that can be the "right" solution to bring out muscle from behind layers of fat!
Is it ok to mail you my schedule...? I could do with some expert advice without boring the entire forum!
Thanks once again!

While it's true that cardio burns more calories than strength training during the workouts, the calorie burning effects of strength training are much longer lasting. Muscle is really the only organ in the human body that can burn fat, therefore the more efficiently your muscles work (from strength training) the more efficiently you can burn fat throughout the day.
Also, during your cardio sessions, it is your muscles that are burning the calories for you. The better off your muscles are the more calories then will be able to burn during each session. I'm not anti-cardio by any means. I know that it's an important aspect of a well-rounded healthy program, but when push comes to shove for physique transformation I have found serious strength training to be much more effective.
Go ahead and e-mail me your schedule and I will definately help you out with it.

Coach Dan
