Hi, I ran acroos this site while I was looking through injury sites and am hoping someone out there can help me. I am a runner who has been getting steadily slower and weaker over the past year. I have constant back pain through my shoulders and neck and also some sciatic flair-ups. This pain dogs me all day, every day whether I am training or not. My running problem is in my right front-to-side quadricep, possibly stemming from either adductor problems or sciatic/periformis related problems. My left leg is shorter than the right and have just been fitted for new orthodis, I need to get the proper running shoes to go with them. I have done chiropractic and massage therapy with little success, I seam to need to go about three times a week for I don't know how long and I can't afford it. I dabbled in Yoga but was not disciplined enough to stick with it. If someone out there told me it would definately help I would be more motivated about it. I have never done pysical therapy or ultrasound. This problem is chronic and seams degenerative. Partly my fault because I feel beat by it I am not sticking to anything, also no-one seems to know exactly what could be wrong or how to fix it. I am supposed to be running the California International Marathon in early December and I can't even train anymore....very frustrated, can anyone help?

I wished I had something encouraging to tell you. Hopefully you have medical insurance that covers regular MD servics. I know chiropractor services are not covered by some health insurance policies. However, see your GP, and get him to refer you to an orthepedic guy. If you have a PPO Health Insurance plan you won't need a referral from your GP just find an orthepedic guy.
Now the pastor at my church use to be a runner. He unfortunately had to hang up his shoes much to his dismay, and mine too. I was hoping to have him for a running partner. He had a problem with his hips, and the xrays conclusively showed fused vertabre. He was told unless he gave up running, he may have to give up walking too!
So, although this seems like a disappointing recommendation, I'd check things out thoroughly before doing any more running. Don't fool around with the chiropractor. He may not have the answer. The worest case scanario is that you could permanently injure yourself. The best thing you could hear is that you might run again. Being a runner myself, I feel for you  If it is not in the cards for you to run again, and you seem like you talk from years of running experience, perhaps you could use your knowledge to help support your local HS Track team, or become a race coordinator, or volenteer, or coach new runners looking to hit the road. You coud have runners do what they do, while you coach from a bicycle. The possibilities are there . . . You could be a great asset to the sport! :D

Hi Chartree!
Thanks for responding! I have gone back to a Chiropractor, one of my problems was that I had recently moved and did not have any contacts. I still have 20 chiropractor visits left for this year through my insurance and so I am going after this problem aggressivley for the next two months and seeing where I am at then. This chiropractor seems very thorough, although there are no changes yet - I've been to see his three times and go back today and I am just trying to be hopeful :) The x-rays showed that I have lost all curvature in my neck, there is some scoliosis in my low back, and too much of a curve in my lower spine as well :( I have gotten a good pair of shoes for with my orthodics now and am trying to where them all day to help with the scoliosis. Again, no changes in my pain level, still can't run, and am eating way too much chocolate in my depression which is not helping, but at least I know that there is not something awful going on in my spine.
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. You are right, I have been running for about twently years, distance for about 13 of those, it means alot to me, not only am I passionate about it, it has also been my coping tool through lifes ups and downs, I am frightened to be without it......but you made some good points, I do have experience I could give back and that is fullfilling, I am just not ready to give up yet! I know people have rebounded from worse and I am hoping to be a success story!!!
have a look at this

hello
have a look into hanna somatic education, this is a method of neuromuscular re-education which can be taught in group classes or
1 on 1.
have a look at the sites below and read some of the articles:
www.hannasomatics.com (the associations website - lists practitioners)
www.somatics.com (practitioners website with some articles)
www.somaticsed.com
www.somatics.org
read the articles or get thomas hannas book somatics (and try the movements)
he mentions scoliosis, pain etc caused by the contraction of muscles and there subsequent fatigue and pain.
unlike many other treatments this is education and after a handful of lessons you should be able to keep yourself free of pain and injury.
if you have any questions feel free to drop me a line. but i would heartily recommend this approach.
regards
chris
