I ran the marathon for the first time when I was 71, in 2002. During the intensive training and after the marathon event, I experienced progressively advancing peripheral neuropathy - numbness of the extremities, ie numb feet.
After 18 months of extensive testing at two neurological centers, no cause can be found, thus no treatment recommended. The doctors tell me to "keep on running!" I have. Since all usual causes, such as diabetes, B-12 deficiency, AIDS, etc. have been eliminated in my case, I have been studying how nutritional deficiencies can cause peripheral neuropathy. At this point, the PN has advanced to encompass my entire bodily periphery, including scalp, face, feet, legs, buttocks, fingers, hands, arms -eveything is numbing up. So I have landed here hoping someone of your running members will point me to some resources that will elucidate for me what happens to the nutritional composition of the body at the cellular level when one starts running hard and long distances as I did. Does the body burn up or use up some nutrient that would alter the body's mechanisms if uncompensated for? What could cause the nerve endings to begin atrophying? Any helpful advice on where I might find some answers will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help, in advance. And "keep on running!"

I've never heard of this, apart from gout. (
I will ask about our older club members & see if they have experienced anything similar. wink

I have just found and read an article on your web site about "runners' anemia" and think this may be a condition related to my experience with endurance running causing peripheral neuropathy to advance to where it is a numbness encompassing my entire body. I would appreciate greatly anyone who can enlighten me more on the subject of "runners' anemia" - I am trying to gather all the information available concerning nutritional problems peculiar to those of us who run regularly for exercise. My doctors have, almost without exception, advised me to continue running. But as I do that, my peripheral neuropathy seems to continue getting worse. It is difficult to justify their advice in light of this, but I want to see if appropriate nutritional supplementation may be the answer to my problem. If a deficiency in my diet or supplementation is the root of my condition, it has not shown up on any testing. I am not diabetic or anemic according to all the tests performed over the past two years. So if any reader of this post can point me to additional information on this question, please let me know. And thanks.

I am a long distance runner who has been recently diagnost with peripheral neuropathy. I am interested in hearing any advice on how to over come this disease. It is currently in my arms from shoulder to hands, I would like to keep it from spreading. Thanks

Slightly off topic but could it be MS?

Hi,

Perhaps runners anemia is the cause, however have you been tested for MS? Tingling and numbness all over the body can be caused by Multiple Sclerosis.

Check it out.

PN Running and Chicago Marathon

I was diagnosed with PN in March and since then Ive upped my mileage. I would like to train for and complete the chicago marathon next year but I am also worried that it will make my PN worse, its already at a 7/10 pain level.

I take many supplements including:

potent B complex
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Thiamin
Chondroitin and SMS
Womens all-in-one vitamin

along with Cymbalta.

Ive read celery in a smoothie can help with nerve pain.

I have made an appointment especially with my neuro to talk about PN and running - any advice I am given I will post here.
