Just checking in to see who is out there. I am always interested in training dialgue as it pertains to track and field development of high school athletes. I have coached at the high school level for 14 years. I competed in high school track in Alaska. PRS for high school 800m 1:48.09, 1600m 4:13.0, 5K cross country 15:12. Ran at the University of Arizona 800m PR 1:47 open, 1:45.9 relay and 46.2 400m, 10k/8k cross country 31:33 and 24:53. USA OT 1988, and member of 1988 US National team.
I am especially interested in new ideas as they pertain to sprint starts, drills, etc. I have experienced a great deal of success, but feel like I may be missing some things as I have been removed from the lower 48 for sometime. I now spend my winters teaching and my summers as owner/guide of a fishing charter company. Thanks, Doug Herron

Hello,

Starts can be tricky to coach as many athletes will spend alot of time standing around or they will do too many starts. I have found it is best to work on starts after warmups right at the beginning of practice as athletes need to be fresh to truly simulate starts. I also try to make Fridays my main start day as many places have split meet days on friday and saturday. I also emphasize starts to the end of the season as intense training has a minor effect with a week to go at the end of the season, also most athletes are tapering off then.

However I also try to limit the number of starts to less then then 10 starts per athlete on any given day. We also try to prioritize the number of athletes that truly need to work on starts as most athletes will not see a significant change in their time due to start issues.

I emphasize starts in this order

100, lead off man 4x100, 110 hurdles, 200, Lead off 4X200, 300 Hurdles then the 400, while a good start will be critical to the elite athlete in these events it will have a negligible impact on a mediocre 400 meter runner per se.

These are my humble observations

thanks
I hope this helps
