Bill's book is very good (I think he wrote it with John Atkinson). The two of them also have a book on test protocols. Books of course date very quickly. Subscribe to journals: either Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association, or the American Swim Coaches Association.

Doing what previous coaches have done is a good starting point, but remember, do you want to also repeat their mistakes, or turn out swimmers just like they have?? They may not have changed what they do for years, so you may be coaching in an obsolete fashion.
Take a risk, do something different, measure and see what works.
Talk to coaches from other sports, I do: cycling, track running, triple jump. We are all dealing with athletes. Use some of their dry land training or injury prevention techniques.
Develop a multi-year training plan, then refine it to a yearly plan, then seasonal plan, etc - plan to succeed, use periodisation in the planning, basic stuff, but not doing it is fatal. From that, the weekly and daily programs just fall into place.

Agree with Marcin. In fact I think there is now an update to his book Swimming Fastest. Swimming is starting to have an attitude shift though over probably the last 10-15 years. New ways of training and slowly getting away from the ridiculous no pain-no gain attitude of long ago.
Ideally look at previous coaches for tips on drills, starts, turns, tecnique, race planning etc... However, I would actually look outside the sport if you want to to be up to date with the latest in training.
From my experience the most up to date and advanced training programs in terms of training is actually found in triathalon. Swimming would be revolutionised if a few simple techniques were adapted from this area.
Don't be afraid to break down strokes into components and develop your own techniques. I new of a guy in the states who had his entire squad improve dramatically when he switched 80% of training to specific forms of sculling only. Don't be afraid to experiment.
