I have read that two research studies on the effects of caffeine found that blood flow to the heart was restricted up to 22% during heavy exercise. At rest there was no restriction. I have had a strong cup of coffee for years one hour before a race (typically one hour of racing) and do not think the performance during the race tracks with the excellent training times I get, where I also drink a cup of coffee. Is is possible that the effects of caffeine under race stress is different from the effects one gets from training with caffeine at a reduced intensity. Thanks for your thoughts. What other ergonomic aids are out there for race day?

Over the years various articles in P.P. have refuted this. D I think the last was a few months ago & it featured swimmers.

Caffiene obviously has a perfromance enhancing affect on training and competition - the research shows this and if it was once on the WADA (anti-doping) list of substances (not sure if it is back on), then athletes can obviously make gains from the use.

It is important that if you are going to ergogenic aids while competing, you need to try them out before the race day. I have heard stories of guys using bicarb for the first time on race day and screwing themselves up with dosages they have know idea how it will affect them - they end up with stomach issues and vomiting while racing!!

Caffiene was taken off the list but was on the probabationary list so could come back on if it is seen to be abused again.

The son of a friend had serious kidney trouble recently after drinking 2 cans of XXX XXXX. He was later found to be allergic to a substance in the caffeine. (
He has never taken tea, coffee or fizzy drinks & only a minimum of alcohol so maybe his caffeine tolerance was lower than "normal". shock
