Hi - does anyone have a view of the percentage of general gym users and exercisers who have a clear focus and goal to their training. I'm doing some work around motivation and goal setting and would find this sort of background info really useful.

Many thanks

I work in Gym where about just over 1/4 have training programmes devised by the personal trainers. Each card has a specific section for writing down their aims, long term & short term goals & how they would feel if they met them & how they would feel if they didnt. Since these cards have replaced the old style (no aim/goals) i think member retention has gone up. probably indicating that the members with clear goals in our gym are more likley to stay!

generally people are either 'away' from motivated, or 'towards' motivated. This means that when people go to the gym, they are there because they either want to get away from the negative effects of not exercising (away from motivation), or they have a goal of being more healthy or looking better they are moving towards (towards motivation). Some people can be a combination of these.
