I know hill training is great if you define it as a 15% incline and running intervals on the hill. But what if you made a race out of a steep 38% grade for 3 miles. You cannot run it because after 100 feet of elevation gain you are anaerobic, and even the best slow to a walk. My question is how to increase stride length and turnover. What is the most efficient training for this? Does endurance training on the flats have any applicability to this kind of running? Why do intervals on the flat? What about specific weight training? Any thoughts would greatly appreciated.

Look at Dr Yessis book 'Explosive running' Some good tip on strength training to help improve stride length.

Racing up a 38degree hill for 3 miles is going to be challenging to train for. The general principles of training can be adapted to help you out. When looking at racing, I always look at the race from the beginning - look at shorter distances at higher intensities (granted this is more sprint/middle distance related). But you also have to be able to complete the 3 miles.

Be interesting to hear how you adapt you training for this event.

Many thanks Aussie for the kind response. In particular, I have noticed a way of taking 10 very long strides aided by hands pushing on my thighs and then backing off to a shorter stride for climbing. Will try your run to aerobic threshold technique.
