Hi guys I am a martial arts instructor I meanly teach kickboxing, semi and light contact. My question is this, what speed drills is there for my students, that in reality to score there winning strike they only have to move two or three steps at the most. And also is there any speed drills that any of you guys know for hand speed. Hope you guys have some nice ideas for me to think about. I would be very greatful.

The speed and power generated in martials arts can only really be trained via plyometrics. How ever the most common mistake with plyometric training is insufficient rest time, you need 3-5mins rest between EVERY set, depending on your age and fitness level.

Ensure adequate time is spent on core stability to prevent excess lower back movement during rapid and demanding movements.

I would also reccomend that olympic lifts are taught if possible to prepare the body for the stress of plyometrics.

Try and find movement that match your martial arts e.g. tae kwon do and judo's preparations are very different.

It good to know i am on the right run as i have introduced pillar work and ployometric to some of my classes. Just one more question how many sets and how many reps is the right a mount and if starting how many or if advanced. Thanks

If starting the most emphasis should be on quality of movements 3 sets of 5 with 5 mins breaks is fine for a beginner. Advanced would be around 10 sets of ten with 3 mins breaks however that is VERY advanced so beware.

Try and get people working in pairs so they can watch partners technique.

If you have beginners then try starting them in functional and stabiliy training (wobble boards, swiss balls, sit'n'stand disks etc.), for more advanced training ideas look for training tools that change during movements e.g. water or sand?

I have have some experience working with/in tae kwon do, if you are teaching a similar style let me know as we can bounce ideas back and forth - or maybe even arrange a mixed martial arts training day? The tae kwon do school I work with actively tries to arrange intermartial arts fighting/training days - are you based near london?

One of the best forms of speed and reaction drill i have come across as a Kick-Boxing instructor must be from Eric Paulsens Vale. As an instructor in Vale Tudo some of his training techniques I mainly his drills I have included in my Kick Boxing sessions as they make the students think quicker and react quicker to situations. One of these such drills need to be done in pairs. Using focus pads one is used as a striking shield while the other will be used to try to catch the jab on the way back. For younger student you can almost turn it into a game. This also works for hooks,knees and round house kicks.
