Any coach out there encountered unpaid athletes who are so stuck in their ways that they refuse any new, scientific tried and tested methods and favour traditional means? I have some difficulty in convincing both the manager and therefore the players to change basic warm-up cool down habits, their attempts at getting fit to play are as dated as the grass they play on! I have tried showing those involved the literature available including peak performance but the language is scaring them away. When i put it in laymans terms they get intimidated by all my fancy ideas! When those in charge were away for a month and i had complete control, fitness levels increased as did performances and subsequently results but as of last night we are back to square one because the men in charge have returned. The easy thing would be to ply my trade elsewhere but i don't want to see these players under achieve! Any ideas....

why not try asking if you can do the training session your way for a few weeks to see what happens?
if they improve and they like what has happened ask if you can add some of your techniques to the training, not trying to scare them off by completly taking what they know from their sport...nobody likes change, but alot of the time change is whats needed to move forward.
minior changes over time seems to work with my athletics group
goodluck

Find the alpha male. Work on an individual relationship with this one and let him introduce your ideas. These people want to know they are special and will welcome your praises.

Did you record any fitness information while the manager was away? If you did and it was as you suspected then you would have good case to convice the Manager to do things your way. If you didn't keep records then convince the manager to let you have a proper trial run with your program having a 20m vo2 beep test every two weeks. Also record all injuries and then you can see if the injury rate has decreased because of your warm up methods. IF thing go well then the players should be happier that they are fitter and less injury prone and the manager will have proof.
A good manager should always be open to new ideas. anywho, if he is not. work behind his back to get him sacked and then you can try and convince the new manager :D. Just Kidding.

Thank's for all the postings so far, i have added some more info which might stimulate more or more detailed replies. As for recording some of the fitness levels during my time in charge it would have been useless without anything to compare it to other than a table of norms which use professional soccer players and therefore would be a bad comparison. The month that i had complete control was unplanned and went from week to week rather than being told that i had a whole month. Why was i cursed with the soccer monster within that some of us are born with?! Life would have been much simpler.

sorry what i meant about doing fitness tests from when you were taking trainings was, that you could do a test now and relate back to it. You said things were back to what they were, i assumed you meant fitness wise.
Anyway, Good luck.
