Periodization

Most cycling books recommend Periodization Training. All books with Peridization have you doing low intensity workouts for a couple of months. I believe Lance Armstrong also uses some form of periodization training. However, in one of his TDF interviews he stated that he stays with in 10% of his TDF shape year around. To stay that close to peak performance, he can't only do "long slow rides" during the winter as many of the books recommend. Any thoughts or comments :?:

i've always gone on the basis that fitness is a combination of peaks and troughs....you have to give your body a chance to recover fully at times [especially as you get older, and i know!].

on the lance armstrong theme i find it hard to compare these professionals with us...we do a full days work too...
but as a competitive cyclist then i would really recommend pete reads "annual manual" also known as the "black book" which gives you a really good, honest 12 month training plan that takes into consideration us athletes at the ground level.

as a respected coach pete read takes you through a winter of "long, slow, steady rides at level 1 which then builds in the more specific work as the season nears.....for me this is the way to go.

Peroiodization works fine unless you limit your racing to 1 or 2 peak races a year. Training doesn't always go as planned due to injuries, sickness,etc. and when your key race comes along you may not be ready.Even if you are ready, you could have a bad race and have to live with it for the reat of the year. Not to motivating.
