Hello
I live in a town that has had the same football coach for 34 years . The team is never competitive . There seems to e favoritism to the extreme . The whole town is dissappointed .
I am thinking about moving . Its a shame that this happens .

Where state do you coach in ?
The problem that you have highlighted is the other side of the coin for me as i have a team who fail week in week out due to a manager who refuses to accept new ideas. How about starting your own team in direct competition to the other and see what happens? If this is not possible, send me the air fare and i will relocate in your area! on a serious note, is it just you who feels a change is needed? If it is a common theme throughout your town then the coach himself must be aware of the problem and might just want some help. I'll keep watching and see if you get your problem solved.

Dear Sir
I read about your concern regarding your team not being competitive, I think there gets to be a point when a person if they have not got the zeal they had for coaching should step down. This can be very difficult to accept for a person. You say the person has 34 years service and favourtism to the extreme, my advice would be that a single person's voice as a player would not make a difference under those circumstances so I would in that case, walk.
I was teaching the boxing club at the local university and the coach had been there for 50 years, a similar situation occured. As their fitness instructor I generally didn't attend boxing competitions as I was teaching but on one occassion I did, it was a shambles. I spent 6 weeks after that teaching them how to box and let them try again in a competition in Edinburgh, some won, some did not. At the end when the local press took their photos, the other coach stepped into take the honours with the fighters and I stood back not being invited.
In a nutshell, politics, happened before and will happen to others in future.
Or to put it another way, its their ball and they decide how they play with it.

I Guess I will move
I do like the town and people . I feel like Im letting them down abit . My kid rushed for 1000 yards in 46 carries three years ago , then as a 12 year old he played fresman ball and rushed for 900 yards 9yds per carry . This year he went to a 4A public school , the one we are discussing and rushed for over 2000 yds at 15 yards a pop . I dont know if anyone follows wrestling but Chris Campbell , Iowa Hawkeye hall of fame wrestler and two time olympian is my uncle .
Im a totally disabled Former US Marine ., so Its easy for me to move . Why not go where the weather is nice ? Im heading for arizona . If anyone knows anything about arizona football let me know . This situation in this town is sad . Im sorry Im giving up .
Peace

What do you do with a unmotivated Coach ?
Im not use I understand "throw them in the pool " lol. But I do know many kids who deserve to play are on the sidelines . Because one of the coaches buddies kids has a lock on the spot . This is the extreme in unfairness .

I am sorry to hear this, both for yourself and for the coach. 34 years is a long time to be an active coach, this person obviously loves to coach, as much as you love to play the game.
Is this person employed? or are they a volunteer? Has anyone suggested new methods of coaching or training to the Coach? If so how has this been received? Is this the only Club/ Team you can play for? Have other Team members made suggestions to the Coach? How does the Team (as a whole) feel about this? How many Team members are unhappy with the coach?
Has the 'Team' spoken to the Coach?
When you say there is favouritism, how does this occur? Are there any systems in place for 'selection', 'conduct', 'training', or 'Rules'?
Who is the Coach answerable to? Has anyone had a meeting with the Coach to discuss the situation?

Thats the whole problem . He's there to coach the kids of his former players .
The whole town knows this and yet we are without a way to deal with this problem.
And after hes gone , I think the atheletic directers integrty is tainted for allowing this .
I can tell you many kids avoid the sport . I have to move .out of this town .
Oh well . What else can ya do .
Nice guy , yes . Good football coach . NO way .

Not only does the town know about this , The papers actuallly write about this problem . I will add the atheletic director is his wife ! All the opposing coaches know and speak about it .
People have written editorails . I did and he erased all my older sons records that he broke . Its a radical situation . You try and be nice and think positive and then he puts out a team consisting of kids of players he coached years ago . They for the most part do not need to workout in the off season because they have the position locked .
My one kid is entering the 9th grade now . I have to move .
What else can ya do ?
Its insane .
