Can anyone give advice to a 17 year old male who has a great chance to make it to state this spring in the hurdles. Last year during track he pulled his hamstring bad enough to knock him out of competition. He wants to know what to do to prevent this form occuring again this year. He warms up and stretches more than most kids I have ever seen in High School. He works out and lifts weights year round with a good coach. I was wandering if a mistake in form like planting your foot wrong or the way a person lands after going over a hurdle would cause something like that? If so how would you correct it. I would really like to be able to pass some good information on to him since he has come to me for help in prevention. Thanks! mb

it's vey common for athlete's to pull a muscle (hamstring) during events and sometimes it's due to the balance between the strength of quad and the hamstring which could cause this. It's usually the quad that tends to be bigger and stronger becuase most athlete's neglect training their hamstrings to match the quads.

Start with glute ham raises, or straight leg dead lifts. Hamstring curls do not strengthen the hamstrings functionally. IF you send me your email address I can forward you some materials with photos for some exercises.

If it would be ok could you send me some exercises to strenghten my hamstrings. Like the other person said, my quads are a lot stronger than my hamies. I haven't torn one yet but I don't want to so I would like to start making them stronger.
Thanks

:) Hi there. For what this is worth-get a Personal Trainer who is into PNF stretching. Get that right and the rest is easy.

Just a few thoughts
