i was practising tackling rugby the other day and i fell on my shoulder, which now leaves me with a dislocated joint.
I am now placed in a sling (no plaster) for 2 wweeks with physio exercises for 6 weeks given by the doctor. why doesn't the doc give me a plaster? and how can my joint pop back into place just by being in a sling
i'm not worried abt how it heals, I'm more worried abt how to get back into the game, as i heard that redislocations are common.
What are the odds and what can i do to prevent it from reoccuring?
I also hav a fever as well after visiting the hospital, does it mean that i'm not treated properly?

thanks

I had this injury a few years ago from a bike crash.

The AC joint is not a ball and socket joint like the shoulder, it's actually a ligiment join for the collar bone and the shoulder blade.

You need to rest the ligiment to ensure that it grows back properly (excercising and moving it will damage it further).

I'd suggest weight training to build your ligiments and muscles in the shoulder to prevent future injuries.

In the past I've used hot packs while in bed to assist muscles to grow back.

Which joint was dislocated - the AC joint as the last post said or the GH joint which is a ball ansd socket joint?

There is no point being put in plaster as it will not really effect either joint unless you have a serious amount of plaster over the torso and whole arm! A sling is used to reduce the liklihood of over movement and the temptation of using it.

I dislocated my GH joint about 7 years ago and kept popping out for another 3 until I did a lot of rehab work on it which I still do today for maintenance. Each injury is different and if you are concerned, speak to medical practitioner again.

thanks for your ingormation.
It is the right AC joint i'm talking abt here.
All they really could do to me was to put me in a sling and stop me moving it i the wrong way.

I think it was really lucky for me to had dislocated my ligament? beecause from my experience, breaing a bone is more painful than ligament
as abt the issue of ligaments growing back, what are the tips. what is the process of ligements growing back
what type of hot packs do you use?
and i still feel a lack of strength in trying to lift my arm up and maintaining it at a satisfactory level

Sorry man. Did not read the title properly.

You will feel unstable for a while after the dislocation but if you are still in a sling, then you should nto be moving it until a medical professional says what you should be doing.

thanks wolf for the advice
i was sent to the fracture clinic two days after my injury, the doctor then sent me straight to the physiotherapist, without a cast or whatever. bascially im in a collar and cuff, and went through one physio session.
the physiotherapist actually told me not to be in the sling for too long, and urged me to start moving it after 3 days because fear for muscle to stiffen up.
so that was my prescription.
my arms still feels slighly dead though. It's as if i lack strength to hold my arm up and it drops down if i'd left it without supporting it with my other arm

How long before do you think I would be able to participate in ANY sport at all?
