Hi can anyone help? I am suffering from a sore achilles tendon at its insertion into the side of my heel. I have tried all the recommendations...icing , resting and strengthening. It goes aawy when I run after some initial stiffness. I am trying orthotics which were prescribed me several years ago but if they dont work I am at a loss? I am a middle aged woman and ran competitively for 15 years but was never a high mileage runner. I dont perticularly want to compete but badly miss my running! Has anyone suffered from this problem and can advise?
Jackie

Hi Jackie,
I would think that you are far from being 'at a loss'. From your description, I will assume that your pain is on the lateral (outside) area of your heel. This can be caused by numerous factors, only some of which can be alleviated by foot orthitocs. I would reccommend seeing your Podiatrist again before using them, as your mechanics may have changed and you may actually do further damage or actually create aditional problems.
Your problem sounds like it is a chronic case of Tendinosis, which (luckiy for you) hasn't progressed to the point that it is painful all the time. See how you go with the folowing:
1. If you stretch regularily, make sure it is after your runs, and dont complete your 'calf stretch' with a fully straightened leg. Leave it a little bent, complete the stretch. Stretch the other leg and then do another on both sides with the leg bent even further. Stretching off a step is also usually a bad idea as it can commonly lead to overstretching.
2. Ice the area for 20 min after your run. I kow you have tried this but maybe you werent diligent enough. I can't hurt and will probably result in improvements.
3. Get a regular massage. It will be painful, but will be a big help.
4. Check your shoes. If your shoes are showing signs of wear, get a new pair. I reccommend 2 pairs for regular runners so they can alternate pairs.
5. Monitor where your run. are you running on a surface that has a slight decline accross your body. If so, it would put tremendous strain on the lateral side of your foot. Run on a flat, even surface.
6. Substitute a water run for 1 -2 of your long runs each week for the next 3 - 4 weeks. Take the load off your foot and keep your fitness.
Good luck
Simon.

Sorry to be thick, but what is ART? I've had recurrent Achilles problems for years and am looking to get back to running in 12 weeks....
Thanks :)
