Hi i'm an ex soldier who left the army 5 yrs ago, since this time i ruptured my left ACL and damaged my menisci cartilage playing football. 4 years ago i had a patella ACL reconstruction and resection of my cartilage and have fully rehabilitated and recovered almost full ROM in the joint and i am able to perform to the same standard as post injury. However, i was upset to find that this procedure (ACL reconstruction)is a contraindication to service in the armed forces and possible Police and Fire Brigade. I find this difficult to swallow as i feel the operation to be a success, can anyone provide any light in to why the procedure is viewed in such a way?

Hi Harry .
I have just read the following on a Police related website:
Skeletal damage and tendon problems can be a problem. However, the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) applies to the police service and your medical condition will be investigated. Providing there is no great risk of police work aggravating the condition or an early deterioration that could lead to medical retirement you should be fine. The most important thing you should do before you apply is to check with your specialist the current status of your condition and the likely prognosis. Then check with your chosen force whether they are likely to take you.
Personally I dont see why it should stop you. I'd assume you may need a medical, but if you passed that surely there would be nothing standing in ur way.
Good Stuff, many Thanks
