I have a strain in my left adductor, I have not run for over three weeks trying to heal it. I can bike and swim w/ no problem, but when I run its painful. I have been putting ice on it daily and hae been keeping it wrapped. What else can I do. Is there any proprioception rehab that I can do or any thing that will help. This has never happed before and I very frustrated.
Thanks,
chris

Hi Chris,

Firstly did you do it running? I am assuming that you know for definite it is an adductor strain.

Secondly, provided you haven't done any further damage over the last 3 weeks the muscle tissue should have healed past the early delicate stages. however the muscle is obviously not strong enough to go back to training fully. You need to strengthen it up again before by rehabilitation.

I would advise seeing a practitioner, e.g. physio or sports massage therapist in your area who can firm up your suspicions of an adductor strain and give you a rehab program. Very simple exercises done in succession to get you back to full strength so your muscle can cope with running again. propriocepion and flexility are the latter stages.

Good luck with it. If you would like me to be more specific then let me know by e-mail.

Agree with Angel. Also, because you are over the acute stage of the injury, lay off the ice, and start applying heat to the area. This will draw new blood and nutrients into the area in an attempt to repair the injury. gentle massage of the area may also help

Angel, Mark,
Thanks very much for your reply. I have been going to a sports chiro who has been doing ultrasound and stim twice weekly, but I have not started any exercises, are there any that you would recommend. I do have access to a gym with machines if that will help. I run triathalons and have an olympic distance race on april 25. Bad idea??
Cheers,
Chris

Adductor Strain

Chris,

I am recovering from a similar injury and have been in physical therapy for five weeks. Perhaps some of the exercises I do would be of use. The difference is only that my injury began in the obturators internus and exturnus, but manifested in the adductors as well as I struggled to use the leg with a badly distorted gait.

Sparing you the details, which are infinitely interesting only to me, the injury began, albeit undetected, a week before my Feb. 15 marathon while I was doing strength work with my physioball. Running cannot be put to blame for this one! I have only just begun to bicycle because the bike seat is ill positioned to avoid the obturators.

My therapist has had me begin by doing exercises on the floor so that no lateral stabilizing muscles are triggered. I'm just about ready to begin dynamic exercises, balancing on the injured leg.

Let me know if you would like particulars about the exercises, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Adductor - help....

Hi

I damaged my adductor quite a while ago and everytime I think it’s better I go and damage it again – not exactly sure how I did it in the first place though…

I used to do Kickboxing and I must have overstretched it ??
From what I understand – most muscles work when they stretch, but the Adductor work’s in the opposite way – it contracts to avoid you overstretching – or at least something like that ?

When it happened I thought it was the hamstring and went to physio who told me it was the adductor - and gave me a few exercises to do to try and strengthen it –
When I thought it was better I went to kickboxing again and took it easy and went for a roundhouse and .. PAIN !!
“when in the round house kick position = just a burning/sharp pain in the adductor region.”

I have now not done any KB for about 3 months at least , but also no other exercises and the last few days I have felt a slight twinge in the adductor/hamstring area.
I went to a physio on Wednesday, but I do feel that it didn’t really help, but have 2 further appointments next week.

AND on top of this - I think I've got a groin strain too... I'm falling apart !

Can anyone suggest anything ?
Suggest a good physio / sprecialist to go to in the London SE1 area ?

thanks

I have a similar injury to the above posting.

This occurred doing kicks about 2 and a half years ago.
I tried to rest and then resume and that didn't work.
Eventually, other parts of my thigh region began to hurt.

When I went to an ortho-surgeon.
I was given Xray- nothing.
MRI- nothing. They told me it was Tendinitis and I should get cortisone shots.
Don't do it.. as cortisone shots are dangerous if applied directly to the tendons.

I went to a professional massage.. and in 2 sessions felt less pain.
So, I recommend a proper massage from someone that knows the body very well.
Then start a program of gentle stretching in the groin and hip area.
It is going to be a long road, but I am finally on track.
