Last April while Mountain Biking I dropped about 4 feet on to flat ground and all my weight went through my left leg, causing my ankle down (toes up) on the pedal. Straight away I felt a sharp pain across the top of my foot (radiating from one side to the other in the crease between the top of the foot and bottom of the shin). This was very sore for a few weeks and was difficult to rotate. Whenever I put pressure on this area ((i.e. squatting on my toes or sudden jaults when cycling, the pain returns). I have had x-rays (no broken) bones and physio, but have now been referred to an othorpaedic consultant, but the appointment isn't for another month. Has anyone come across this sort of compression injury before? Why would it still be sore and uncomfortable after nearly a year? I think I may have torn the ligaments. Any info would be appreciated. :D

A tear in the ligaments whether a grade 1 or 3 would give you considerable pain and restriction in movement in the initial phase. Your ankle would of swollen to protect the joint. If it was ligament damage you would also have a large instabilty within the integrity of the joint/s compared to the able limb. Bring your toes towards your body may cause stiffness resulting from scare tissue formation. The pain could be due to the structure of tissues changing - as the ankle has not moved through a full range of movement, ligaments/tendons/muscles shorten so when you tryto perform an exercise which requires good mobility, pain will occur.
while speaking to friends of mine who specialise in rehabilition and podiatry, they have spoken of injuries that have altered their biomechanical structure of the sub-talar joint (the main joint in the ankle) which has lead to refered pain else where and including pain/discomfort around the ankle.
Theses patients of theirs had orthotics fitted and were fine afterwards. I am not saying that this is the case but you may find that it is not long explanation for it and rehab could be easy.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. It seems you could be right with regards to the muscle strength. I had my appointment with the Orthopaedic surgeon yesterday and he said it was hard to diagnose, but strengthening exercises would be useful. However, he did give me a steroid injection into the muscle, which he said helps in the majority of cases. I've printed some ankle strengthening exercises of the web, and will try those out. The Orthopaedic surgeon is also referring me for physio, using a wobble board, etc. so hopefully I'll have this thing sorted soon. :D
