i'm having an ankle arthroscopy to hopefully sort out some ankle problems. The MRI scan showed some rough cartilage which my doctor says he'll smooth out. He said the scan looked normal apart from that.
I get a localized ankle pain on the inside, below the inner heel bone and the ankle aches on top where it joins with the foot. I'm unable to run and have tried less invasive methods to no sucess
Anybody else had an ankle arthroscopy who can provide their advice etc..
Is it safe?????

Hi, i'm having trouble with my left ankle, have had for 4 years, mine's a sharp sudden unpredictable pain that causes me to immediatley stop whatever i'm doing, although it occurs when i'm not using it also. The procedure you're going to have is well worth it if they've managed to diagnose the problem, they're still trying to discover what mine is!! The latest thought is that i broke my ankle when i fell and tore my calf muscle and ligaments in my foot 4 years ago, and the break was missedleaving a fragment in my joint. Let me know how it goes, i'm interested, Emby xx
Oh, and by the way, i'm a girlie, hehe, had a lot of emails as if I was a guy, bit worried because I don't know why oops !! Em, xxx

emby - thanks for the reply. I'm actually having the op tomorrow. After weeks of worry and concern i'm going ahead with it. I've spent the last four weeks or so posting similar questions on other sport forums. But not really had any positive replies. Even though i can still walk ok i'm unable to do any running - which is why i live!! The problem does seem to come and go , but when i do feel the pain i know that surgery is the only answer.
As for you, if you live for sport, which you must do, then i would not hesitate in at least getting an MRI scan done. If you can't pay for the scan at least get see your doc to get you on the waiting list. But if the problem ain't cleared after 4 years - then it sounds like there will be need for some form of surgery. I've only had my problem for almost a year!!! or maybe i'm just mega impatient. If surgery don't fix me up not sure how i will feel but i know the potential benefits far outweigh the risks.
i'll let u know how it goes, providing i can still walk to my pc.
emby, see your doc today!!!
Ankle Arthroscopy

Hi there Jamesb,
I have been suffering for a number of years with pain in my ankle which has slowly reduced my running from daily to zero. I now spend most of my day in the gym concentrating on upper body and low impact cardio work, (cross trainer/concept 2). I can run, but its painful. I limp for a few hundred metres until the joint warms up, then its fine. However, it makes up for it later! My Doctor has xrayed the joint and has recomended arthroscopy. I note you were due your operation in 2004 and would like to know how it went? Are you back running? has it lasted?

I was lucky enough to have my ankle treated by one of the top ankle arthroscopy surgeons in the UK a couple of years ago.
Here's his website (which is also very useful for research): http://www.ankle-arthroscopy.co.uk/
If anyone is looking for a consultation or a surgeon I would strongly recommend.
Good luck with your ops, hope your results are as positive as mine!

Hi lovetorun. Have you fully recovered from your ankle arthroscopy? I have recently had an arthroscopy after suffering pain after an avulsion fracture of the ankle. How long after your arhroscopy before you were pain free? Hope to hear from you.

I had an arthroscopy 31st Dec 2010. Swam after 5weeks. Have been back to very slow (10min/mile) for the past two days for 40mins. Have been doing leg weight for the past 3weeks. Previously running in the 33min 10k range.
Thou still sore. With restricted flexibility. About half that of right. Massage on the calf and foot helped.
I had the op because i couldn't ride the bike. Thou haven't attempted that yet so not sure. Have noticed with running the foot with the problem, the associated hamstring gets tight. An equal stride pattern isn't being followed.
