I broke my fibula whilst out mountain biking a week past Saturday and the hospital put on a plaster and told me not to put any weight on it. Not even two days after the accident I had to go back to the hospital for another XRay and they put on another plaster and told me to walk on it. I was quite concerned at first as my ankle was still very sore however, I returned to hospital today and they told me it is looking good and that I won't need surgery. Most of the comments I have read on the internet have been based on people having surgery and I wondered if there was anyone out there who was in a similar situation to myself?
I am very sporty and I am dying to get back to full fitness as soon as possible. I am hoping that as it is looking good and I don't need surgery that the minimum time of 6 weeks in plaster will apply to me. Today was the first day I have been walking about the flat without crutches and even managed to clean the flat although I will continue to use crutches....but it doesn't feel too bad without them. Are there any runners out there and if so how long did it take before you were running again? Any exercises you can suggest for keeping the muscles strong before I take off my plaster?

If your ankle fracture is truly non-displaced, it will likely heal uneventfully. Some soreness and swelling may persist for 3-6 mos. after injury.
In the cast, try ankle pumps, toe curls and toe extensions. Also perform straight leg raises and terminal knee extensions to maintain quadriceps strength.
