Happy New Year All! I broke my ankle on December 20th and have it in a cast and have been told not to put any weight on it...I feel so lopsided ( its my right ankle thats broken) Doing the most simple things are a real pain and I'm bored stiff, watching TV and surfing the net. I live in a tiny cottage in snowdoinia and as the cottage is so small, I am not getting about much ( its like an obstacle course here..) The ankle is broken in several places with a bit of bone 'floating' about but - the Dr said that I don't need surgury right now and judging from previous posts and scars etc - I hope I won't need to have any.
Doing simple things exasperates me..washing is a real difficulty and I can't do things like making tea and carrying it...weather here is very very cold and as the cottage is high, it dosent get a lot of light..BUT..I did have a fab day on the 31st...I went to the local tesco and found they have en electric wheelchair called a 'martcart'.wow, it was AMAZING! I went round the store for an hour and a half and it was soooo good to be able to get about on my own - plus, it felt a bit like driving, which I can't do as its the right ankle..yes, I reversed for the first time in 2 weeks and had a really cool time...if anyone had told me that I would spend the last day of the year having amazing fun zooming around a supermarket in an electric wheelchair, I would have thought they were nuts but - it was like being a kid again and the feeling of indepecdence was amazing..they have a cafe - so thats going to become a place for me to go and chill for a bit cos there's a lift up to it. I hate supermarkets but - this was a fab hour I spent there.
The fractures quite complex - Dr looked very 'impressed' with this and murmured about my possibly having to go to Liverpool on New Years Eve for an op - but then rang and said they would treat it in a cast - the break has also gone into the joint..but - I remain optinmistic about all this and am determiined that when the casts off, I will literally 'will' my ankle into walking again without signs of its painful past! I broke a leg years ago, but understand that its more difficult when its an ankle cos of the mobility issues of the joints etc.
My husband is home with me but I feel a real pain having to ask him to do things - its amazing what we take for granted in terms of movement. When I broke my leg, I was living in London in a top floor flat with a new baby and it was nightmarish..but - I got through it and remember being wheeled towards portobello road market at what felt to me, alarming speed by my husband!
Aghhhhhhhh..The BOREDOM is the worst!!!!!!!!!! Watching TV, feeling 'lopsided' and not being able to wash properly; today, I rang the hospital to ask if I could use their physio gym but was told 'No'.
From an earlier post, I read that going up and down stairs on ones bum helps with the flabby arms and tum thingy and I am going to restart doing this ( I really felt the 'pull' on my stomach muscles and arms ) but abandoned this to sleep on the sofabed downstairs. I have gained some weight ( seasonal!!) and am determined to lose this and tighten up to keep my spirits up and also to be more mobile, ready for when this ugly cast somes off.'
I really do feel for the lady who broke both ankles - I hope you are on the mend and will feel 100% very soon.
My cast is quite 'comfy' but - when I had it re-done at the fracture clinic, it was excruiciating and I could see my toes going purple..I went back and she told me to try and pull the new plaster off..not a very gentle type; still - it could have been worse. I am back at the clinic on the 6th.
Hopefully the celebrations for New Year won't have sent the amount of people experiencing this thing soaring ( in truth, I think it will as the ski season is in full swing) best wishes to all for a full recovery and a fab new year!
smiles across the miles from freezing snowdonia :0)

Hi there,
I just posted a message on another part-I think. I broke my ankle on the same day as you. It's an absolute nightmare as I have a very mobile 9 month old baby and a large dog. Husband is helpful, but obviously has to go to work during the day. I have managed so far, but with a lot of effort and if it wasn't for my little boy I think I would be sobbing in bed all day!
At least you've managed to get out to tesco's- am actually quite jealous! I've been to sainsburys with my mum, but that was painful- not the ankle but doing food shopping with my mum and the baby. I lost her a few times and was left waiting in the aisle with arms full of food, she'd been distracted in the toy section-grrr.
I have been 'bum-bumping' up and down the stairs and I do feel a little more toned!! Great for bingo wings.
How much longer do you have with the cast on?
