Just to tell all fellow sufferers that things do get better eventually. I broke my left ankle, fracture dislocation, plate and screws, and badly sprained my right ankle in September last year.
Someone had spilled coffee on stairs and i slipped and skied to the bottom.
My left ankle was dangling and rotated my right ankle was trapped beneath me. Did it hurt!!
The ambulancemen were brilliant, straightened my left andkle and splinted it with the help of entinox.
Operated on following day Plate and 8 screws bimmalleolar fracture, in hospital 6 days then home and the fun starts...
I went through misery, isolation, helplessness and depression,I swore a lot and got skilled in hopping, beckham boots and crutches.
Accomplished on zimmer frame also. Slept downstairs for a month and honestly thought Id never walk again.
I am now nearly back to normal, walking, swimming, cycling not much swearing but happily living.
When things get tough have a weep, feel sorry for yourself, you are only human. Lay off the comfort eating though, now I'm mobile i've got a few pounds to shed....

thank you Linda for responding. The no response to my post was beginning to add to my aggitation. I know this site originates in England...I'm in the states, but someone out there HAS to be experiencing what I am. I sometimes feel so aggitated and anxious, I just want to tear this cast off! Would you be willing to keep up an email with me?

Just found this site and thought I'd let you know what' happened to me. I think I've been luckier than some of you out there. I slipped down a few stairs back in March and ended up in A&E but the decision to operate was immediate and within a few hours I had the 'external fixation' operation. Two weeks later, I had further surgery and now have plate and 7 pins. Seems I'd managed to break just about everything! The good news was that, because of the surgery, I had to have a removable cast and the operation sites dressed so didn't go stir crazy with a hard cast. Pain relief was a combination of paracetamol, codine and nurafen - the surgeon prescribed a nice cocktail that certainly helped me. Check with the Dr though.
Eight weeks after the accident, I was allowed to 'light weight bear' but no more than 20% because the bones hadn't fully united. Last week I was told I could bear as much weight as I was comfortable with and am doing as much as I can. I've not been off work at all and have been able to get out and about with the help of freinds and family - staying in does nothing for moral! One exercise I was recommended whilst I still had the cast on was to flex and point my toes as much as possible against the resistance of the cast. Now I've been told to use resistence bands to help the flexibility and mobility. 20 repetitions 5 times a day pulling towards you with and pushing away. I've noticed the more you do the easier it is (crutches are a great way of banishing bat wing arms!) and my foot is almost looking normal (at least first thing in the morning, by lunchtime I've got swollen sausage toes) but it is getting better. Don't rush it, your body will tell you when you've done enough.
