Broken ankle injury
I broke my ankle 5 weeks ago & had to have surgery & put screws in my leg.Could anyone give me any feedback on how long to heal & what they went through as far as rehab & getting back to work(How long was you off work).
I am really concerned if I will walk again & will I have a limp. Most people tell me it takes 6 weeks to heal & some say maybe 3 months. Please can I get some answers on this.I am really scared about my ankle.Thanks.

Still waiting for any advice about ankle.

Lack of replies???
Hey Casi23 (why 23 by the way? nosey I know but I was curious)
I suspect the reason for your lack of responses is due the severity of your injury, combined with limited knowledge?
The pin you have highlights the severity but you didn't say where it is? I'm guessing you have been/are in a cast? for how long? How big (above or below the knee)? have you been given/ told you will have physio? How did you break it? How active were you prior to the accident? what type of activity/sport did you participate in? have you been given any advice so far?
I know you prob didn't want this barrage of questions but if you provide more info then you may catch a physio or someone in sports medicines attention and then get the answer you want.
For what its worth I would be surprised if you couldn't walk at all after rehab, although I couldn't comment on the limp without hearing more info.
Sorry, but in the meantime - keep smiling.

Broken ankle injury
My response to replies is I have small screws in my left ankle for 5 & a half weeks now.I had a cast that was up to my knee now I have one about half way down my leg closer to my ankle.
Have my next appt. on April 5 to xray it again & then maybe start rehab.I broke my ankle by slipping on ice in my driveway.I'm a supervisor at my job that required me being on my fee for 7 hours on.
Doctor said I can do light duty as long as you are sitting down & not putting pressure on left leg.I guess I will know some news next week.
If anyone has any advice or have been through this please let me know. How did you keep from not going crazy being around the house.Any activity please.Thanks.

I'm sure you will be fine, I had hip to ankle plaster casts four times now so I know how you feel. Speak to your doctor about hospital or community physio when you see them next. Be wary of going direct to a personal trainer - often PT's do not have adequate rehabilitation experience to offer physical therapy.
Hope it all go's well for you - i'm sure you'll be running in no time.

Dear D. Robbins:
Thanks for the encouragement it really made me feel better. What happen to make you have a cast that big for 4 times.I really want to know & how did you cope.
That sounds like pull out your hair times & make you go a little nuts. Please explain what you did to get through it.

Broken ankle injury
Hi Casi,
I dislocated my patella's (kneecap's) twice on each leg (although at different times) and had an operation on my right leg. All in all I was on crutches for around one year, thankfully not in one go though.
I still went to the gym (even in cast) to keep me sane, read alot, watched ALOT of films. Luckily for me I was also a student so also had studies to distract myself.
Have you been off work the whole time? Did you train prior to injuries? if so do you do anything now e.g. upper body workouts?
Dan
broken ankle injury reply
Dear D. Robbins:
I have done light duty sitting down though but haven't done any upper body exercises. How long did you go to rehab before you could walk w/o falling or pain & did you take any pain medicines.
It is 6 weeks since I fell any advice.
Casi
Broken ankle injury
Casi,
I was in a cast for six weeks, resting for two weeks, then physio for around six weeks. Initially I was on pain killers and anti-inflammatories but I stopped taking them the second I was allowed (roughly one week after injury). I was walking unaided after 4-6 weeks without a limp in 8-10 weeks.
I cannot really help without knowing much more about the injury and surgery, and considering what you have said so far I would say wait til april 5th and then find out what your consultant has planned. Are you in the UK? If you are then there are additional options that you have in private rehabilitation should you be unhappy with what the NHS has to offer.
However the NHS does offer free consultation with many experts interacting, therefore I would definatley advise that you go through this process first seeing as your next appointment is so near.
Keep smiling
Dan
Broken ankle reply
Dear Dan,
When you was in your cast did you mean a total of 14 weeks (3& half months)before you could walk or 8-10 weeks.Where you out the cast at 6 wks & w/o cast for 2 weeks& then 6 more weeks for rehab & did you wear anything on your foot ,leg or ankle.
What kind of exercise did you do in rehab&suggestions for upper body exercises.
I hear that a lot of people wear some kind of boot& then some kind of low shoe.Do you know anything about that.Respond back please.
Casi
Broken ankle injury
Hey Casi,
From the point of injury it would have been around 8 - 10 weeks before I could walk unaided (although I was in a cast for six of those weeks), I wore a tubegrip bandage on my knee for a while but prefered not to wear it if I could.
My rehab was lots of mobilisation and isometric exercises, a little massage, some ice - did not use heat treatment as I was still inflammed.
There are many different styles of supports available but you may not require them so try not to worry too much. Do you normally train in a gym? I'm sure that there is someone there who can advise you on some upper body stuff.
You have an appointment on weds if I remeber correctly? email me and let me know how you get on - in the mean time TRY AND RELAX, don't worry too much - you'll get high blood pressure.
Remember, keep smiling

Broken ankle injury
Dan,
I got cast off today & could put my foot down but still could not walk with it.I can't bend it all the way to the left & I can't stand up straight where my other leg can bend.
I think it might be the screws in my leg(I hope not).I can't bend my leg all the way back to get it straight.Did you go through the same things.
I start my rehab on Tuesday the 11th & I hope they can help me start to walk.I'm trying to stay positive but it seems like one step forward two steps back.Any advice.
Casi
Broken ankle injury
My advice is easy: enjoy lots of baths - do not try and rush full movements. It will take time so be patient. Did you get any medication? any advice on what to do at home? At this point I would say you just need to get used to being castless. the 11th isn't to bad at all for follow up.
Dan
Broken ankle injury
Dan,
So does that mean that it is normal when you first get a cast off you can't bend your ankle everyway.
Casi
Broken ankle injury
Casi,
Definatley, if I remember correctly it took me around 3-4 weeks to get full movement after one cast was removed. Don't try and rush it - your physio will tell you how hard to work it next week.
Dan
Broken ankle injury
Dan,
 Was your ankle & leg redder than the order parts of your body.My doctor said it because your ankle is bruised.
I thought after 6& half weeks it would be close to ready but I guess not. This is really bothering me.Any encouraging advice. :(

Broken ankle injury
:) Hey Dan,
I haven't written you in a while but I want to tell you how I'm coming along.I am about to start my 2nd week of rehab& I'm able to stand on my leg for a little bit & take a few steps.I'm still using my walker & crutches but soon I hope to not need them.I did the exercise bike Friday for 10 minutes.
I been doing alot of turning my ankle back& forth& up& down. The therapist have been having me stand to put weight on that foot more.He said he want me to quit hoping along on 1 leg & to keep trying to use that foot more.
I know it going to take time but I'm so happy I'm improving day by day.Response back please with and feedback. :P

Hey Casi,
Glad to hear your doing well, and even more glad to hear you sounding more positive!!!!!
Sounds like you're making good progress now. Are you enjoying the physio? You'd be surprised how often people start regular exercise after injuries!
Hope things still going well

Broken ankle injury
Hi Casi
Not a medical opinion but I might be able to give you some advice. My background is that I shattered my ankle in a freak rugby accident (guy slid into me with his studs up by complete accident and the studs hit me square in my ankle. The X-rays show the studmark indentations on the bone ouch!). After that I tore all the muscles around my ankle when I returned to full training after 22 weeks on the sidelines. This all happened when I was 14 yrs old.
By 18 I wasn't able to walk properly after playing a game of rugby (the next day I had a huge stiffness in my ankle and wasn't able to bend it or point my toes, it was a strange sensation, it didn't hurt at all, I was just completely physically unable to point my toes, as though I had lost the feeling in the muscles that perform that function.
Getting to the vague point, I'm now 28 (yrs not stone!) and have started running and playing rugby (read the "steep hill" posts if you have a day or two!). I now have real problems during the winter months if it's cold or wet with rheumatism. My girlfriend has started calling my ankle the pinecone because she can tell how cold it will be in the morning by how badly I limp around!
The specialists I've seen have all said that while I did a lot of physio on the ankle before I started playing rugby again, I didn't do enough to ensure the bridge of my foot continued developing, hence now I have quite bad flat feet.
The only advice I can give to you is during your recouperation include plenty of physio and especially hydrotherapy (essentially running in water, concentrating on changing direction several times in an environment where your ankle is cushioned by the water - I found out just a bit too late that this is immensely helpful) and DON'T NEGLECT THE BRIDGES OF YOUR FEET!
Phew was that worthwhile? I don't know...take anything you like from it
snap! any advice?
Hi Casi,
I just joined and read your question. I broke my ankle last week and same as you I have had a plate and some screws put in. I am now in a cast. Can you tell me how you have been getting on and how long it took before you could walk again.
I broke my ankke kite boarding. I do a lot of sports including wake boarding, surfin and running. I usually work out 3 times a week at least and I feel as if I am gonna go mad just sitting here. Do you have any ideas as to what I could do to keep myself sane and if you did any exercises to keep yourself fit.

Broken ankle injury
Sue,
Hello I broke my ankle on Feb. 19,2006 at 7:10 a.m(I thought it was the worse day of my life).
I was a person who never broken any bones & my job detailed being on my feet 7 to 15 hrs a day so I was very unhappy.
I started walking in about 2 months but I was stir crazy being around the house too much.Get out as much as you can & do not get discouraged it does improve, it just take time.

Ankle
Hi Casi,
Thanks for getting back to me. I will do my best to get out as much as I can, unfortunatley, most of my friends work and I live in a bit of a remote area so transport is very limited. My gym is about 8 miles away and to get a taxi costs a fortune. Like you my job required me to be up and about for at least 8 hours per day, I also did a lot of driving so that too is also out. My daughter is getting married in August so at least I know I should have the cast off by then. Thanks for your advice it is greatly appreciated. I expect I will spend more time on my pc whilst I am not able to get out much.
Sue.
BROKEN ANKLE
MY NAME IS AMANDA AND I AM 21 YEARS OLD AND I JUST BROKE MY ANKLE ON OCT.11,WHICH IT HAS NOT BEEN ABOUT 5 AND A HALF WEEKS. I WAS TAKING OUT THE TRASH AND I WAS ABOUT TO WALK DOWN MY APT. STAIRS AND I TOOK ONE STEP AND I FELL DOWN. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THAT IT HAPPEND UNTIL I WENT TO STAND UP AND MY FOOT WAS SIDEWAYS AND MY BONE WAS STICKING OUT THE SIDE OF MY LEG. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 2 DAYS AND WAS SENT HOME, WITH 8 SCEWS ON THE OUTSIDE AND 2 SCEWS ON THE INSIDE AND ALSO A PLATE. WELL THE FUN BEGAN THERE. RIGHT WHEN I GOT HOME I COULD NOT GET UP THE STAIRS ON MY CRUCHES SO I JUST WENT ON MY BUTT,(FUNNY BUT IT SUCKED). THEY HAD ME ON PERCACET AT FIRST. THEY MADE ME REALLY SLEEPY AND OUT OF IT OF COURSE. THEN THEY STARTED TO MAKE ME REALLY EMOTIONAL AND DEPRESSED. SO MY DOC SWITCHED ME TO VICODIN AND THAT IS WHAT IM STILL ON. RIGHT NOW MY PAIN ISNT REALLY BAD BUT I HAVE MY DAYS. I AM A WAITRESS AT BOB EVENS REST IN DELAWARE, OH AND IM ON MEDICAL LEAVE FOR 3 MONTHS. IM REALLY SCARED ABOUT WHAT ITS GOING TO BE LIKE WHEN I GO BACK TO WORK. BUT ONTOP OF ALL THE PAIN AND BULL SHIT, MONEY IS THE ISSUE FOR ME. LIKE BILLS AND FOOD. SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS EMOTIONALY, IM SURE YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN BECAUSE YOU ARE LOCKED UP IN THAT HOUSE TOO. I FEEL LIKE IM GOING TO GO ABSOLUTLY CRAZY AT TIMES. I DONT GET OUT MUCH BECAUSE THE STAIRS ARE SUCH A PAIN IN THE ASS. I GET OUT TO GO TO DOCTOR APT. THATS REALLY IT. RIGHT NOW THE DOCTOR IS LETTING ME PUT SOME WEIGHT ON IT BUT IM NOT ALOWED TO WALK ON IT. HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THERAPY. WELL WRITE BACK BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE WERE GOING THOUGH THE SAME THING AT THE SAME TIME.
broken ankle
MY NAME IS JESSICA AND IM 19 YEARS OLD. MY SITUATION IS LIKE THE ONE ABOVE. OCTOBER 13TH I FEEL DOWN MY STAIRS IN MY APARTMENT. I WAS HOME ALONE CARRYING BLANKETS DOWN THE STAIRS WITH MY CAT AND DOG RUNNING AFTER ME. DURING ALL OF THAT I FOUND MYSELF GOING HEAD FIRST DOWN THE STAIRS. I GRABBED THE RAILING AND MANAGED TO TURN MYSELF AROUND, BUT LANDED ON MY LEFT ANKLE. I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG BUT I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS AS BAD AS IT WAS. I LIFTED MY ANKLE OUT OF UNDER ME AND IT JUST COMPLETELY FLOPPED OVER AND WAS STARTING TO SWELL UP REALLY QUICK. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AND I WAS ONLY HALF WAY DOWN THE STAIRS. I SLID DOWN ON MY BUTT (I ALSO KNOW THAT FEELING AMANDA..HAHAHA) AND GOT THE PHONE IN THE LIVINGROOM AND CALLED MY BOYFRIEND WHO WAS AT WORK. BY THAT TIME I WAS PANICING AND IN EXTREME PAIN. I WAS CRYING SO HARD HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND ME. FINALLY I CALMED DOWN AND TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND HIS RESPONCE WAS "DON'T WORRY IT'S PROBABLY JUST SPRAINED." WHILE LAYING ON THE FLOOR FOR A HALF HOUR WAITING FOR HIM TO COME HOME WITH OUR 80 LB. BLACK LAB WALKING ALL OVER MY LEG I KNEW IT WASN'T JUST SPRAINED. BY THAT TIME IT WAS AS BIG AS A SOFTBALL. FINALLY HE CAME HOME AND HE SAW HOW BIG IT WAS AND I COULD TELL HE WAS NERVOUS. HE ASKED ME TO LIFT MY LEG UP SO I DID AND HE SAW MY ANKLE JUST DROP AND DANGLE AND THATS WHEN HE STARTED TO FREAK OUT WITH ME. THEN CAME THE STRUGGLE OF HAVING TO GET UP AND GET DOWN 3 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS...WE JUST HAD TO PICK AN APARTMENT ON THE THIRD FLOOR WITH NO ELEVATORS. AFTER BEING IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM FOR 3 HOURS WITHOUT THE OFFER OF ANY PAIN MEDS I FINALLY GOT X-RAYED AND THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO GET SURGERY WITH SCREWS AND PLATES PUT IN. I HAD TO WAIT 3 DAYS BEFORE I COULD GET THE SURGERY THOUGH CAUSE SOMETHING ABOUT THEM HAVING NO DOCTORS ABLE TO DO IT. I HAD TO GO SEE A SPECIALIST AND HE WAS ABLE TO GET ME INTO SURGERY THE 16TH. AS FAR AS PAIN MEDS I WAS PERCRIBED THE SAME AS ABOVE WITH THE SAME REACTIONS. I WAS COMPLETELY KNOCKED OUT FOR A WEEK STRAIGHT IT SEEMED BEING UP FOR MAYBE A FEW HOURS EACH DAYS AND THAT WAS THE TIME WAITING FOR THE NEXT DOSE OF PILLS TO KICK IN. I WAS ALSO HAVING A HARD TIME EATING. TWO WEEKS AFTER SURGERY I HAD TO GET MY STITCHES OUT AND GET A REAL CAST ON. THAT WAS THE MOST PAINFUL EXPIERENCE I HAVE EVER HAD TO GO THROUGH. NOT THE STITCHES..BUT THE CAST. MY ANKLE WAS SO STIFF, SORE, BRUISED AND SWOLEN FROM SURGERY THE NURSE PUSHING ON IT TO GET IN A 90 DEGREE ANGLE WAS TORTURE TO ME. THE CAST ENDED UP HARDENING AND IT WASN'T IN THE FULL 90 DEGREE ANGLE SO THEY WANTED ME TO GO BACK TWO WEEKS LATER. TWO WEEKS LATER I WENT BACK AND THEY GOT IN PRETTY CLOSE. DURING THIS TIME I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO BOTHER TRYING TO GET UP THE STAIRS TO MY BEDROOM, SO MY COUCH BECAME MY BED FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS ABOUT. I ALSO DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO BOTHER GOING OUTSIDE, BECAUSE I HAD THREE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS TO GO DOWN TO DO SO. PLUS I WAS AFRAID OF FALLING AND MESSING UP MY ANKLE EVEN MORE. THE ONLY TIME I GOT UP WAS TO GO TO THE BATHROOM. I WAS EXTREMELY EMOTIONAL, AND FELT VERY LONELY. A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THIS HAPPENED I JUST MOVED FROM NY TO NC AND MY BOYFRIEND AND CO-WORKERS WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE I KNEW HERE. TALKING TO PEOPLE ON THE PHONE ISN'T THE SAME AS FACE TO FACE. PLUS IT WAS PROBABLY EXTREMELY HARD ON MY BOYFRIEND HAVING TO DO THE CLEANING AND COOKING THAT I ALWAYS DID. I JUST GOT MY CAST OF NOVEMBER 30TH AND GOT MY WALKING BOOT. DOCTOR SAYS X RAYS LOOK FINE AND I SHOULD BE BACK TO WALKING IN TWO WEEKS. I WORK AT A DAYCARE CENTER TAKING CARE OF INFANTS SO UNTIL I CAN BE FULL WEIGHT BEARING I CAN'T RETURN BACK TO WORK. IT'S ONLY BEEN ONE DAY BUT I FIND IT VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL ONLY TAKE TWO WEEKS. THE DOCTOR SAYS I WONT NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY AND TO SLOWLY PUT WEIGHT ON THE BOOT USING BOTH CRUTCHES. THEN TAKE AWAY ONE CRUTCH, THEN SOON JUST BE WALKING WITH THE BOOT. IN THE MEANTIME PRACTICE WRITTING THE ALPHABET WITH MY TOES. RIGHT NOW IM LUCKY TO EVEN BE ABLE TO WIGGLE MY TOES, THATS ABOUT ALL I CAN DO. I FIND THIS BOOT EXTREMELY WIERD, I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S JUST ME BEING AFRAID TO PUT ANY WEIGHT ON IT OR WHAT, BUT SOON HOPEFULLY THAT WILL CHANGE. IM STILL BLACK AND BLUE AND EXTREMELY STIFF. THE WORSE THING ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING IS MY INSURENCE DOESN'T START UNTIL THE NEW YEAR...SO ALL OF THIS WAS SELF PAY. AND NOT BEING ABLE TO WORK I'M UP TO ABOUT $16,000. YIKES!!!!! COMMENTS ON EXCERSIZES I CAN DO TO GET BACK MOVEMENT, GETTING USE TO THE WALKING BOOT BETTER, REALLY ANY ADVICE WOULD BE NICE.
AMANDA- THINGS YOU CAN TO THAT I DID TO KEEP MY SANITY IS OBVIOUSLY CATCH UP ON TV SHOWS/MOVIES YOU WANTED TO SEE BUT NEVER HAD THE TIME TOO...I ALSO HAD A TON OF PICTURES JUST IN BOXES SO I DID A FEW SCRAPBOOKS. ALSO WITH THE HOLIDAYS COMING I GOT ALL MY CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DONE, OBVIOUSLY ALL ORDERED ONLINE CAUSE THERES NO WAY YOU'D FIND ME CRUTCHING AROUND A MALL RIGHT NOW. AND JUST TRY TO RELAX EVEN THOUGH I KNOW ITS HARD WHEN YOU HAVE A MILLION THINGS RUNNING THROUGH YOUR HEAD, BUT SOON WERE GOING TO BE BACK TO WORK WAITING FOR OUR NEXT DAY OFF. I SAY THAT I'M NEVER GOING TO BE CAUGHT ON THIS COUCH AGAIN, NOT GOING TO WATCH TV FOR A YEAR AND I WANT TO BE OUTSIDE EVERY MINUTE I CAN GET BUT I KNOW AS SOON AS I GET BACK TO WORKING A 50+ WORK WEEK IM SURE THAT WILL CHANGE. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
Fracture-dislocation of ankle and torn ligaments!
Hey nice to hear that other people are worrying and going a bit mad about their injury too. I had my injury on 16th Sept 07 playing soccer, spent 5 days in hospital before i had my op - ORIF (metal plate and pins on my fibula) plus had my torn ligaments on inside of ankle repaired, 3 days later i escaped from hosp in a lovely below the knee cast! Kept this for 2wks (8th Oct) then had my wounds checked and a new cast put on, was at this point allowed to partial weight bear. Had cast removed again 4 wks later (8th Nov), told xrays were excellent and sent home on crutches and told to see physio and return to hosp on 20th Dec. Then had a really boring week waiting for a physio appt as i didnt know what i was or wasnt allowed to do!!
It is now 5th Dec and i had my fourth physio session yest and my head is still done in - physio said its improving but i cant see it! Still on crutches - no one seems to know how long for!! Movement of ankle not too bad except for forward eg. keeping heel on ground but moving knee over foot (like a lunge), hardly any movement at all and what little there is hurts lots! Will it get better is now my worry as i do a very manual job and doubt ill be able to if it doesnt! Any advice or personal experiences welcome. Been 11 weeks since injury.
I have just been reading all
I have just been reading all of your stories on your injuries and I can really empathize with all of you!
I injured my leg in June this year. I woke up one night to get a glass of water and whilst in the kitchen I felt light-headed and the next thing I knew I was on the floor with the most unbearable pain in my leg and my leg was at an angle - it looked like something out of a horror film. I was screaming so loud that my neighbour who lives below me heard me and thought I was being attacked so called the police and my flatmate heard me and called an ambulance. It took the paramedics 10 minutes to arrive but it felt like an eternity. It took them 2 hours to transfer for onto a stretcher and take me down to the ambulance (I also live in a block of flat on the 4th floor). At the hospital, the doctors confirmed that I had severely broken my tibia and fibula bones near my shin and left it to me to decide whether I wanted to have metal plates fitted or for them to manipulate the bones into position and to wear a cast without surgery. He said that both procedures would have the same results but without the op the bones would take longer to heal. I decided on the latter as I was terrified of having surgery and was worried about having another operation later down the line if the plates needed to be removed. I waited for 5 days for them to do the manipulation and put me into a proper cast. The pain was excruciating and no amount of painkillers of even morphine seemed to help enough. I was discharged from hospital after 2 weeks and spent the next 4 months being looked after by my grandmother at her house (from July - October). I didn't realise how long my leg would take to heal but as I opted for the more natural option (without plates or screws) it took considerably longer. As my cast was hip to ankle, I was unable to use crutches which meant for a long time I was unable to leave my bed. My doctor had also confirmed that where I'd fractured my leg, it was the worst place in the whole body for healing due to the lack of blood that is pumped to this area. During this time, I felt very depressed, despite all of the support I had from family and friends. There were times when I felt very lonely and useless and I just wanted to bang my head against the wall. I read more books, watched more TV and DVDs in 4 months than I had in the last 4 years . It definitely helped to pass the time and take my mind off my injury. I deeply missed doing normal things and having routine in my life as a lot of you have probably experienced. I found doing the most basic things the hardest such as trying to wash myself or make a sandwich. During these 4 month, I had a different cast put on every 4 weeks and was relieved to have a below-knee cast put on after 3 months as I was now able to bend my knee gradually and become a little mobile and use crutches. I began physio sessions and my physiotherapist gave me gentle exercises to practice at home to build up my thigh muscles and knee. Slowly the pain also became a lot lighter too.
On Monday 26th November, I was relieved when at hospital my doctor told me that my leg had heeled by over 75% and that I could now come out of plaster and begin partial weight-bearing with my crutches. I was really happy as I knew this was a step closer to walking again. The next day I had a session with my physiotherapist and although it felt strange to have my leg back and to have my foot touch the ground after so long, I felt like I was making progress. I even cycled on a bike for a few minutes. She said that hopefully I'd be walking by the end of the year so I decided optimistically to give myself a target of walking unaided by Christmas Day.
That was until Sunday 3rd December, when I left my flat to go for a walk on my crutches with my boyfriend. I crossed the main road outside of my flat when all of a sudden one of my crutches slipped on the wet pavement and trying hard not to fall, I tried to balance myself and put of all of my weight on my bad leg and heard my leg crack and fell to the ground. I couldn't believe I had done it again! I knew from the pain and previous experience that something was broken. I was crying from both the physical pain and the thought of having to go through all the physical and mental trauma that I had endured over the last 5 months again when I was just weeks away from making a full recovery! I feel extremely unlucky but also foolish. I shouldn't have gone out when it was raining and wet. Anyway, an ambulance came and rushed me to hospital - the paramedic though I had just torn a ligament but a doctor confirmed in hospital that I had fractured my ankle on both sides and part of it had been crushed! I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I stayed in overnight until the doctors made a decision not to operate (at least noe for now) and fitted me in a ski boot and sent me home. The strange thing is that they have told me to take the boot off twice a day to exercise the ankle, to ensure it doesn't get too stiff but as I've just broken it less than a week ago, I am finding it very hard and painful to do so. My ankle is incredibly swollen and has turned every colour of the rainbow in the last few days. They said that the boot is better than the cast but I find it strange that I have to take it off to exercise it so soon after the injury.
I apologise for going on for so long but I feel like my injuries have taken over my whole like during the last 6 months.
Jessica/Amanda/Jena, have your doctors told you how long your ankles will take to heel? And do you know whether they will regain the same strength and flexibility they had before your accidents?
I wish you all a full recovery.
Dany, I can tell you it
Dany, I can tell you it took me almost 2 months for my ankle to heal. From october 13-november 30th was my healing time, but I also had surgery. Ive been in a walking boot for about a week now, and when I was in there to get my cast off they said I should be full weight bearing with no crutches in 2 weeks and soon after wearing normal shoes in most cases. Then they said some rare cases take a year. After one week im still on both my crutches. I was also told when im just sitting take my floot out of the boot and try to write the abc's with my toes to get some motion. I can barely move it a little up and down. It's still bruised from when it first happened..and it swells up when I practice walking on it alot. I can feel the plates and screws in my ankle and honestly everytime i look at it I cry. I'm in a rush to get back to work, even though the chances of that by the new year are dull. From reading your story, to me it doesn't sound right. Like you said it's so soon after your injury. Unfortunitly I didn't really have the choice of not having surgery...but even so, if somethings broken it should be in a cast atleast for a month i'd think. My doctor says i'm not going to need pys. therapy and I don't think thats right either. I guess we just have to trust their judgement even though at times it's hard. Afterall these are the things that could keep us from walking again, and that's what scares me the most. It sounds like you have a case of bad luck like me. Good Luck to you..and like the doctors told me...Use pain as your judgement, don't overdo it. If it hurts take a break for awhile.
broken ankle
hi everyone, I just read all your emails. I just wanted to see what you thought about me. I broke my ankle 5 days ago and the hospital put me in a splint and then the next day the doc. put me in a cast. He wanted me to have surgery and put two screws in my ankle. it says on my papers that it's a closed, pilar fracture tibia. I am 6 months pregnant and I do not want surgery. They want me to have surgery when im awake with a epideral, I said HEC NO! they also wanted me to have a full leg cast, i said NO, so they put a cast up to my knee and I have to go back in 3 days to get x rays to see if the bone moved. Any advice? He said 6 weeks in a cast, (that's if I don't have surgery) any suggestions on what I should do? please someone give me some advice. Thx. so much,
broken fibula
Hi,
I read the reply "Fracture-dislocation of ankle and torn ligaments!" and had a freaky moment of wow, this person has been following me and posted my story. I broke my fibula on the 18th of october after bending down to pick my watch up off the floor. My left knee cap dislocated and my fibula bent until it shattered. After an exciting $700 ride in an ambulance to the hospital i had a back slab put on and was told to go home. 5 days later i was in the hospital being cut open. I have a plate and eight screws holding my fibula together and a scar on the inside of my ankle where they fixed my ligaments. I was put in another back slab, and left the hospital 3 days later. 3 weeks after that i went back for more x rays and a proper cast put on. No weight bearing for the whole time. This sucked, almost as much as it sucked that i couldn't go swimming considering we're just coming into summer here in Australia. 4 weeks later, 11 december, i had the cast off and was told everything was fine and that i was allowed to walk on my leg, which was great news, as at that time i didn't realise the excruciating amount of pain i was going to be in when i put my foot on the floor. It's been a week since i had my cast off and i'm still heavily relying on my crutches. I've tried numerous times to get repetative physio and been denied. I have no idea how long it is meant to be before i can walk. I was a waitress and studying cooking which required me to be on my feet for long periods of time, and i'm starting to go stir crazy being stuck at home. I've been doing some hydrotherapy with my mum at the local pool, which is great. I just want to walk!!!! All i want is a little bit of hope. I want to be walking before christmas. :D
right ankle injury
I broke my right ankle in september i had a screw put it in as i snapped both back and front ligaments aswell as chippin bone.i had an operation to remove the screw on the 16th of november and now are back at work but i have a limp is this serious. i have hardly no muscle in my calf and no strength in my tendons. my doctor didnt prescribe me with physico and need some advice as to what i can do to get muscle into my leg again as i am affraid to get back to the gym and run.
any help would be great.

Broken ankle
I broke my right ankle Thanksgiving night, went to the Er and was x-rayed and put into a splint. After seeing the orthopedic dr., I had surgery and was in a plaster cast for a week. Then back to the dr for a fiber glass cast which I wore for three weeks. Today I got my walking cast with a "shoe". They've told me to try walking on it and gradually stop using the crutches, but right now I feel so stiff and sore and it's scary. I'm still using the crutches, but want to learn to walk without them so I can return to work by Jan. 7th. Does anyone know what the next step is after this walking cast? My husband and I wanted to take a trip for our anniversary, but if I still can't wear normal shoes after 2 1/2 weeks, then we may have to postpone our trip. That's why I am so anxious to be back to normal...really normal!!!! Thanks for any advice.
Broken Ankle
Wow I'm excited to have found this.
I feel very alone in my current state.
I fell coming out of my apartment in December 21st on some black ice. My boyfriend drove me to the hospital where they got me in right away. They didn't think the break was that bad (gave me no painkillers) until they took the x-ray and realized I had a bimalleolar break. I inverted my foot and the pressure from breaking the inner bone snapped the outer bone and shifted my entire foot out of alignment.
I was lucky enough to get surgery the same day since the swelling was so controlled but I now have two plates on the outside and seven screws. I spent 2 weeks in a plaster splint and just got a fiberglass cast. They tried to have me point my toe when they took the splint off and I couldn't do it. I danced for about 10 years so I can point my ankle and toes almost to the floor and was very dissapointed in myself.
I'm now off work and going crazy. They told me to take as much time as I need and I know I'm not ready to go back but I feel like a broken bone isn't something that should keep me away from my desk job for 6 weeks.
Really what I'm hoping for is some advice on workouts/stuff to do to keep the rest of my body in shape. I'm going to see a personal trainer next week and I have a pilates ball and weight bands but I'm not sure what's best. I'm also in the process of trying to drop about 40 pounds.
Good luck to everyone else. It's nice to know someone else understands what you are going through :)
Broken ankle injuries
Hi there!
Back in August 2007 I fell down the stairs resulting in a broken fibula and fractured ankle on my left leg.
I had an operation 2 days later to pin the fibula back together, I was told it was one of the worst breaks they had seen!!! which is just typical for me!!!
I was let out of hospital the next day with a cast covering my foot and finishing just under my knee. I was allowed to partial weight bear on that foot so long as I was using my crutches.
I was in plaster for 8 weeks in total and had to spend that time with my leg elevated to reduce the swelling. Every time I stood up I could feel the ankle swell within seconds which was uncomfortable in the cast.
It probably took me 6 weeks after the cast was removed to be comfortable and confident enough to walk without crutches.
I would say even now 5 months after the break I only have about 50% movement in that ankle. This also means I can't bend my knee properly when I'm standing up and have to lift my heel off the floor to do so.
I've been told that so long as I do the exercises given by the physio and keep moving the ankle I should be back to normal in about another 4 months time.
My ankle still swells up if I'm standing on it for too long but not as much as it was when I first came out of plaster. I find walking mildly uncomfortable but not enough to stop me doing it. I find walking properly (heel to toe) stops me limping.
I find the pins in my leg slightly uncomfortable but not enough to want to have another operation to have them removed.
Whilst I'm not convinced that I'll ever get back to full movement in my ankle, I now go to the gym 4 times a week (can't do anything that involves bouncing though)and new years eve I spent the evening dancing!
So it's not all doom and gloom. Someone else I know did exactly the same a few months before me. He lives with a physio and told me not to expect my ankle to ever be the same. I think you get used to how it and just make the most of what you have got. I've heard stories of people having to have their legs removed due to similar breaks so I'm just happy I still have my leg and ankle and can get about OK. I can stand for long periods of time now so wouldn't be restricted in any kind of job I wanted to do, the swelling goes down pretty quick. My only concern is arthritis in later life.
Hope this helps a bit, I know it isn't a success story as such but I'm ok and am getting on with life the best I can. Who know's maybe in 4 months time I'll be back to normal!?! Whatever that is!
Broken ankle
I just got my cast off today after having the walking cast on for two weeks and prior to that having a splint and then a cast on since Thanksgiving. I guess my expectations were too high, because I though I would immediately be able to walk without assistance or limping. Wrong! The skin feels really tight especially where the incisions were made for surgery. I can't really move my ankle up and down without pain. I will begin physical therapy this Thursday and hope that helps. I guess I was just wondering when I should expect to be back to normal whatever that is?
Broken ankle
Wow, here I was feeling sorry for myself only to find this web site with many people in the same predicament. I cannot understand why Doctors cannot give you a booklet or something similar indicating what to expect going forward. Mine was a sporting accident......'watching Golf!'. Slipped down a moist embankment and snap, next second finding my foot at right angles to my leg. Everybody in the vicinty saying "oh my G^%", "Je^&% Chr*&t" and looking away. Along comes a fellow spectator (unknown to me) who happens to be an Orthopeadic Surgeon. He promptly instructs me to bite my golf cap as he is going to put my foot back into place. Having seen many cowboy/war movies I promplty do what I am told and a split second later my foot and leg are aligned. 2.5hour drive in an ambulance and now have plates and screws like most of you and wondering what the next step is.My plaster(#2)was removed last week (6 weeks), but I am still unable to put pressure on my foot. Swelling still there. My Doc did not even recommend physio which by the sounds of things is essential? On visiting my Doc I can be grateful as some of the injuries I see are far, far worse than mine. The break
Hi
Great to have found this discussion board. Maybe i expected miracles when my cast came off and was shocked to find i could not put any weight on it, for the last two weeks with my cast i was walking around really well without my crutches. My break was in three places, slipped on ice. Took me 35 years to break a bone in my body, so it was a job well done! I was wondering if anybody has had the same treatment. As well as a plate with nine screws on one side, on the other side, i have a long screw that is fitted into the large bone which MUST be removed in a few months. (I live in sweden so communication between the doctors and myself was and still is difficult - so i dont completly understand why this was done, hence looking on the net and came across this site)
Its been two weeks since i had my cast removed, and have pushed myself to move around because i was so desperate to work again. I have not been seeing a physiotherapist and wonder if this is really important. I returned to work last week (half time), but have an easy job. The swelling concerns me and on one side it feels numb. Will the feeling return? And if i have the chance to remove the plate (im on the understanding that the plate can stay if it causes no discomfort - but does it restrict movement?), should i take it and how much more time off work should i expect? (or, more so, is it painful again)
I am not a serious sportsperson, so i am sorry to hear about people who enjoy their hobby and have to go through this. It must be very frustrating. Good luck everyone, happy healing!
I broke my ankle too
hi i broke my ankle yesterday falling off my horse. Staight away it swelled up on just one side and looked like the bone had moved over. I was quite a long way away from the house so my friend had to lift me onto my horse and lead me to the house where i went to hospital. When i was there they took one look at the ankle and took me for xrays. It was a saturday and so they have put it in a temporary cast which basically goes to my knee but is only hard around my ankle and at the back of my leg. On loads of painkillers but still really hurts. Apparently its an unstable break, and so i think may heal wrong, or move, not really sure anybody know? I have to go back on monday (they said the right doctors werent in on a weekend) to decide whether to have pins put in or not....any suggestions as to which is best? I usually do a lot of riding (english team last year) and also netball and hockey so im going mad shut up in the house. Ive been told not to move unless i have to until monday and im already climbing walls. Im ok when im with people but as soon as im on my own or i drop something i just feel helpless and want to, or do, cry. Glad to read the support on here but can someone please say what they did to try and stop being so emotional, sarah
Tib and Fib
I suddenly do not feel alone after reading these comments!
Early last november, I slipped outside my house and went over, falling on my right leg. I was screaming so loud, my bf and father had to carry me inside the house. My bottom leg and ankle swelled straight away and my dad decided they should take me to A&E.
Once there I had my leg x-rayed and it turned out I had broken my tibula and twice fractured my fibia. As it was such a bad break I was admitted to hospital and had surgery to put a plate and a whole lot of screws in my leg. I spent 5 nights in hospital.
Once home I had a lovely temp. cast on which was removed after 2 weeks. I then had a red cast on up to my knee for 4 weeks. I was on crutches and was told while I had the cast on to be non weight bearing.
I had my cast off in december and was told to be partial weight bearing with crutches and to start physio. I went back in January and was told to be full weight bearing with crutches. I had an x-ray to see how things were going and unfortuantly I have suffererd nerve damage and have a v week foot bone.
I've been trying to walk without crutches, and the pain is unbearable! My foot is often blue and my leg swells immensly!
I have no idea how long it'll be untill I can walk unaided.
This past 10 weeks have been a right laugh i can tell you!
my gosh! i cant believe you
dear dany,
my gosh! i cant believe you did this twice, once is plenty enough for anyone! i cant believe they did not do surgery the second time, seems like most people with this type of injury have a metal plate and screws put in, especially if it was crushed. also seems strange that they want you moving it so soon?
i broke my fibula and also crushed my tibia, had 2 surgeries done and still cant put any weight on my leg (3 months so far... and a few more to go with this cast) so i can understand.
best of luck to you and dont go breaking that leg of yours again! keep your head up :)

my story......
i broke my FIBULA and crushed my TIBIA on halloween night 2007 it was an open fracture, bone sticking out of my leg and some pieces of it actually fell off! i still have them. i was on vacation and trying to take a shortcut back to my hotel room which involved jumping over a wall, oops, i landed terribly wrong. called a cab instead of an ambulance to take me to the hospital as i didnt have insurance. they re-aligned my bones and did surgery the next day nov. 1 (put 4 long screws in my leg attached to a metal bar on the outside, external fixator, to temp. hold my bone in place) i stayed 4 days in the hospital. came back just over a month later dec. 4 to have a second surgery done (sliced open the front of my leg and put in a metal plate and about 8 screws to hold it together, also put in some bone grafting) stayed 4 more days in hospital, i had an epideral in for 2 days after and was numb from the waist down, couldnt even sit up (not fun) but still had pain! i now have a hard cast on and its been 2 months since my last surgery, still no weight on my leg for a few more months. i live alone so i also get soooo board! i like reading everyone's stories, so i dont feel so alone :)
thanks for letting me vent!
im supposed to be getting something called a BONE STIMULATOR this month which i will wear on the outside of my cast for about an hour a day. its supposed to help my bone heal up better, cause we dont get much blood flow in the lower leg, has anyone ever used one of these before, please let me know! thanks.....

Another broken fibula story for the list
Hi Guys -how I wish I had found this trail in October when stuck at home in elevated none weight bearing leg cast (removed 16 Dec).
I have almost good news about progress!
I broke my febula at roller disco (9Oct), after being impacted by this guy rolling into my boot from the right. I now have a not so bionic leg with 8 pins keeping a plate secured to the side of my bone and one large screw through the bone (not sure what that one is doing) but at least my foot is not hanging off my leg anymore.
Anyway (16 Dec) I had my cast removed. On the 19 Dec I couldn't bare the incapable feeling any longer after four days of having my cast removed and still living with my crutches and constantly looking at my sorry hobbit foot... I turned the music up loud and DANCED in the living room with the aid of my crutches, it was hard work as I had just been on a 7 hour *flight the day before and been layed up for 7 weeks and had 0 fitness levels.
Anyway I needed to get the circulation around this bloody elephant ankle -so I danced and danced; after about 15min I could feel the blood getting through and my leg warming up for the right reasons. Little by little I put preasure on my leg without the use of the **crutch... after 20min I even took about three steps without the crutches touching the ground! Dancing made me flexible in the first place so I figured it could kick start me back to health. My wonderful father massaged my ankle every evening with Arnica oil to help the swelling.
Its now the middle of February and I am back on my bike cautiously cycling through London. I've stared physio since I only have about the third of my flexibilty in it. I'm determined to get it back 100% if not, then I'll accept 99.9%. I have to do it now otherwise it will only get stiffer and worsen with age. My leg does tire but is building up strength slowly, its swollen on an evening, I will say when this happens I do get grumpy?
I've noticed I can walk with a limp when I want to, and just do when my leg tires but majority of the time -I'm pretty much walking without out a limp. My physio says that my not so bionic leg is just under 1cm shorter than my good leg, and I knew it had shortend but I'm determined to not have a limp and be back in my heals in 1 year. Progress is the only way forward!
Keep going everyone, shit happens and its all brought to challenge us. It's sad, it depressing and I don't particulaly like my scar or the alien metal inside my leg but I'll just have to and one day I might just forget about my bionic leg thats consumed my head for far too long!
The body is a fantastic gift and will go only where you take it!
All the best for 2008
Note:
*Flying by the way does make the leg swell more. Wear flight socks and move about as much as possible.
** A nurse said only ever use both crutches, never use one! It it will only bring further problems to your compensating posture and could cause further injury.
*** I learnt this one too late: A friend of mine recomended pipe insalation/lineing wraped around handles of the crutch for ease.
Hi there fellow sufferers!!
Hi there fellow sufferers!!
Mine is a bit of a tale but hey if you're lying there with your leg in the air what else would you be doing.
On the 24th September I was coming into land after my 18th sky diving jump, I should've of packed it in when I landed in the trees a number of jumps prior.
I bet you know what's coming next...snap crackle pop and there I lay with my foot pointing @ two o clock. I was in Spain at the time on the drop zone field, after approx 1 hour I started to realise the severity of the situation. In broken English (pardon the pun) the medical team asked me some questions to gauge the extent of my injuries, then administered some eye bulging drugs huddled around my foot and commenced the bone relocation ceremony.
Once in hospital I was told I would require an operation to fix the fibula and tibia, this took place the following day, the professionalism was second to none and I remember drifting off to sleep with classical music in the back ground and the subtle babbling of a foreign tongue.
After two days in hospital I was released with an all clear well I think It was because I couldn't understand a word they were saying, the funny thing was though they wouldn't allow me to keep the crutches so I had to hop to my pals car which took at least ten minutes.
The next day I flew home with Ryan Air, that was the wrong thing to do but I got away with it through some incredible luck.
Thirteen weeks later and I was well on my way to recovery. Physio twice a week and very beneficial! Despite what the doctors say it's a must for long term benefits’.
As a rule twelve weeks is the normal duration before taking on a long haul flight after such an injury, so I did my time and thought I'd celebrate the New Year...Las Vegas style. The journey was horrendous and took the best part of seventeen hours, on and off of planes. Within a day of arriving in Vegas I started limping and my leg expanded at an alarming rate, from toe to top of thigh. The pain increased with each hour until I could bear it no longer, in hind sight the pain could of saved my life because on the 3rd of jan my 44th birthday I hobbled into a medical clinic and three hours later was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis, in many cases this condition goes unnoticed so beware.
Off to hospital again with my suit case by my side. Three hours is all it took to assign me to a ward then I was lying in a private room where I stayed for three days. TIP of the day INSURANCE, you just never know.
In summary back on track even skipping and running for 1 1/2 minutes. Don't underestimate the power of your mind look after yourselves and your injuries but keep moving forward. Elevate leg at all times, if flying flight socks are a must and drink lots of water and stay mobile.
Here's my mobile should you want a chat. Dotors are great and where would we be without them but they tend to treat us like mushrooms...left in the dark. +44 07977090185
*waves crutches*
Hello from yet another sufferer, both past & current.
6 1/2 years ago I slipped on a train station footbridge & broke both my left tibia (once) and fibula (twice). My foot was pointing backwards, and I got through something like 6 casts within the first 3 days. 8 days in hospital, 12 screws, 5 1/2 inch plate, 4 weeks non-weight bearing, 2 weeks in a partial weight-bearing cast, and a further 3 weeks off work. I was still on 2 crutches for a couple of weeks, working it down to one, then eventually none. Physio for about 4 months, which I was released from slightly too soon because I moved house & the new health authority were a bit rubbish & not really interested. The metalwork is still in place to this day, and I've got about 85% of my normal movement, but as my joints are very flexible, the physio said I'd got 100% + of "normal" movement and should be happy with that. For the most part, the metalwork isn't a problem, though you can feel & see the bottom couple of fibula screws through my skin, and I'm very careful not to knock the joint because it hurts like crazy. Cold & damp weather tend to make it ache, but normally it's fine.
Skip forward to 17 January this year. I was on holiday in the Dominican Republic. Decided to pop to the beach bar for a glass of coke (lunchtime), and managed to fall on the stone steps. Knew something was wrong straight away. Taken to hospital, and found I'd managed an oblique (diagonal) fracture of my right fibula. Smart. This time, there was only one fracture, but being diagonal it's a whole lot messier than the other one, and I'd done assorted damage to the ligaments. Another operation, another set of screws & plates, only 6 screws this time, and a shorter plate, but one syndesmosis screw going between the tibia & fibula, which should be being removed in about 2 weeks time.
This time I'm non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, until that screw comes out. Beyond that, I really don't know what their plans are. I flew back to the UK 6 days after the accident & operation, in a backslab & stretch bandage, fortunate because my lower leg swelled horribly, and my toes looked like little bruised sausages. No choice really, the insurance wouldn't have paid out for an extension of the holiday, just lots of anti-coagulant drugs, anti-inflammatories, painkillers & anti-biotics.
The hospital here in the UK are being average - complaining about the choice of plate, the stitches, the crutches, but have given me a proper cast now, and so long as they get me out of it in a few weeks, and give me lots of physio, I won't complain too much. And I'm managing to get to the gym for some upper body weights & cardio to pass the time.
As Merrimad says, INSURANCE is a must, really it is. I dread to think what the hospital bill came to for 2 nights in the hospital, the surgery, drugs, crutches, etc. I just hope the long-term recovery from this break is as good as the last one, I don't mind losing some movement if it matches the left.
meedja, I cringed reading
meedja, I cringed reading your story...having to go through all of that again is constantly on my mind, when I’m in the bath at the swimming pool or just climbing a few steps are to name but a few focal points. Good luck for the future I hope my next snowboarding adventure doesn't put me in the same boat as you.
Regards,
5th met # and feeling fed up!
Just been reading some of the posts and it has made me feel better! I broke my 5th met and had severe soft tissue damage across forefoot and ankle. I had a lower leg cast for 6 weeks and it's now 4 weeks since the cast came off. Like some of you I thought I would be ok by now! I've had a few episodes of 'the weepies' which my husband tells me is normal - some of his work colleagues have had same experience either themselves, or their partners, after injury. I jsut cry it out and then try to cheer myself up with a good DVD, music, or phone my friend who has been brilliant. The day the cast came off my consultant put in an 'urgent' referral for physio and I'm still waiting - it got lost in internal mail!I'm still using crutches outdoors but walking better than I was but it still hurts at times to put full weight on foot/ankle.It's still bruised and after having my leg down even a short time and after walking, even in he house my foot/ankle swell and walking becomes painful.Does anyone know if this normal? I'm limited in what exercise I can do as I have a chronic kidney disease that causes severe renal colic/pain, very often after/during activity. Swimming is ok.
Hello koorahk what you're
Hello koorahk what you're now experiencing with your ankle is exactly what I had, swelling pain and bruising for months. My walking has improved since I started wearing a compression stocking...every day now for over a month...I even wear it at the gym and only remove it at bed time. Your husband can help with your recovery by gently massaging your ankle, this is not far off what my physio is doing for me. Even now five months after my injury I still take every opportunity to elevate my leg with a cushion under the calf. It's a frustrating time because the healing process is so slow but the good news is does get better.
Another story to add...
Thanks to so many of you for posting your stories. It definitely leaves me feeling not so alone! I fell on a patch of ice on Feb 6, broke my fibula and fully dislocated my ankle, tore all my tendons. When I fell I heard something *snap*. Luckily I had fallen on some snow, and had a thick jacket on. I tried to put my foot flat on the ground to see what I had done, and my foot kept flopping -- not the way a foot should be! I flagged down a driver who stopped and called the ambulance for me. I've never felt that kind of pain in my entire life.
Had surgery 1 day later. I have 8 screws and a plate. I was in a temporary cast for 2 weeks, and today went in for a fiberglass one up to my knee. It is non-weight bearing, and I was told by my doctor to go back in about 4 weeks because my leg will continue to get smaller. I don't know if this happened to any of you, but I lost 10 lbs -- and the swelling went down tremendously, so the temporary cast was extremely loose. I don't know how much my leg muscles will continue to atrophy, but I am concerned about it.
I am getting around with a wheelchair and crutches. I try to keep my leg elevated, and am doing upper body excersizes as well as leg lifts to try to keep my blood circulating and get some movement. I have really poor upper body strength so getting around on crutches is very tiring, and I am so scared of falling!!
Good luck to everyone -- keep posting on your progress.
broken ankle
read the above with interest.I think I am one of the luckier ones but I wonder if anyone can advise me.
20th feb thought sprained ankle 2900ft up. got down myself then 2 miles on uneven surfaces. Was bearable when could plant foot flat on floor- harder after went dark! drove home hobbled on one stick to relieve weight on bad leg but after a week went hospital cos still very swollen. They said broken ankle put in fibreglass cast said for 6 weeks no weightbearing. My problem is over 60 now live alone in area not long moved to, Dead boring as everyone knows! can cope in house but problem is I have a big dog and no garden and obv. he needs to go out to do his business. Accordingly pretty desperate/depressing cos I find hopping about on crutches both tricky and dangerous but would feel better if I could put some weight on it using crutches if not now then asap. My injury clearly not the worst since;-
I did have to walk initially have since walked aided by stick
Apart from when I first got up was not that painful and I have taken no painkillers nor anything else.Nor did the hospital prescribe any anti inflammatories.
Question;- will the Doctor just go by textbook? is there any hope talking to him?Am I simply being unrealistic? they have to cover themselves etc.
The other thing- 40 years ago broke my leg playing football. usual plaster up to hip for 3 months horrible but after that the below knee plaster seemed dead easy- memories do fade but i def. walked on it and once went upstairs on a double decker bus.
Also after it came off I do not remember any problems walking but could be wrong of course
Glad to feel not so alone
Glad to feel not so alone lol...I fell on Feb 13th of this year, going into my son's daycare and happened to fall on ice hidden underneath snow...I heard a faint snap, didn't think anything of it, got up walked into the daycare, decided I needed to sit down for a few minutes...Called work to let them know I would not be able to cover an evening shift, and asked the daycare worker to put my son in my car for me, and walked out to the car...At this point the ankle was starting to swell up like a softball and turning all sorts of colors..I somehow managed to drive to my mothers, called the house and asked my mom to come out and take him in and that I was going to the hospital, thought I had a bad sprain or break...Got to ER, taken in almost immediately which made me think it must be broken, or they are worried about something...I went for x-rays, they never did tell me what bone I broke, and informed me that surgery was NOT needed in my case, they placed a splint with an ace bandage wrapped over it, had this for about a week, then was put into a walking cast, told I could put weight on it with crutches after two weeks and begin walking with the boot on, and the cast is to be removed March 20th...How soon after can you perform normal skills, such as walking the dogs, full weight bearing, no limp, or crutches, and in my case, wear heels, or wedges around 4" as work is a formal atmosphere and proper dress attire is mandatory??
Thanks :)
tysh
funny just after mine yours is the experience I was hoping to see( the only one on the site tho`) pity you do not know what bone it was . Was there any suggestion you were given shortened sentence due to having look after son?
I cannot believe work could be so unreasonable as to expect you to wear high heels; that would be absurd. If owt went wrong you would get "millions".
Walk the dogs next week- can mine come?
