I had an injury similar to the one roger the doger had. I broke it July 3rd horsing around on wet, sloped grass on the golf course. I walked on it for 24 hours thinking it was sprained. Went to emergency, they dianosed a broken fibula? (the smaller bone down there) and had it wrapped and put in one of those blow up ankle restrainers. Couldn't see my doctor until the 6th. He sent me to a specialist on the 8th who put it in a cast. I am told that I can put weight on it in two weeks and the cast comes of on the 12th of August. Can anyone tell me how long until recovery ie: when can I hit my driver? How long after the cast comes off can I play?
Can I expect it to be weak forever? What about arthritis? Will my range of motion be the same after a while? I am 54 years young, in good shape and anxious to salvage a little bit of this season.
Broken Ankle/Need Someone To Talk Too :(
7th Dec '09, 6:10pm
So many incredible stories!
I broke my ankle and fractured my fibula on 10/10/09. (I fell down the stairs!)
I had 2 pins and a plate put in my right ankle and I had to spend the night in the hospital.
I was put in a splint and was scheduled for a follow up in 2 weeks. At my follow up they took the splint off, xrayed foot and put my first cast on (a red one).
Every two weeks I had a follow up appointment which included xrays. At 6 weeks my first cast came off and the doctor had to adjust my foot (cause it was casted with my foot pointing down) and then cast 2 went on (a blue one).
This past Friday (12-4-09, 8 weeks) I had surgery to remove the pins and then again another cast was put on (a white one).
I'm just really scared about walking again - I have a fear my ankle is gonna break as soon as I start walking on it again. Plus I'm on the heavier side so I know that will have some impact on my healing. It would just be real nice to have someone to talk to right now.
I am getting married on 5-15-10 and I really want to be walking normally by then. Please any comments/suggestions would be great!
BROKEN ANKLE

i broke my ankle in October 2009 and broke both sides of it they said from a-c, c is the worst, mine was c.
I spend 10 days in hospital, had to have an operation to have a plate put in my ankle.
They plastered it up, but on recovering in the ward, my toes were going tingly, and couldn't bear to touch my foot, i was told it was the pressure as they did the cast to tight, and had to relieve it with the looked like a saw lol. The pain was so intense, even having four children wasn't that bad.
Was allowed home after two days as i got up had a shower, and didnt let things get to me to much.
I thought by coming home it would easier, but i was very wrong. Tried going out into a shopping centre with my crutches and was so tired had to keep stopping and had to find a seat.
Couldn't get up the stairs, so went up on my bum lol was allot easier and safer.
To stay at home was easier in the long run, not that i enjoyed it as i didnt. Felt bad having to ask my kids to help me all the time, and simple things like making yourself a coffee was very frustrating. Had to ask the kids to leave a chair in the kitchen so i could make myself a drink and i could sit there and drink it, as i couldn't carry it over to the sofa.
People dont understand what it feels like to have to rely on everyone, when you only have one leg. Felt depressed and very unhappy, as im a very active person, usually swim six days a week, like to cycle and walk which is what i was doing when i slipped and fell.
Been in plaster for eight weeks now and to be honest im not real worried about not being able to walk properly at first just want this plaster off.
I'm lucky i suppose as my hours were reduced to 10 a week because of the recession so i was currently looking for work. But i hate this sitting around, i can sympathize with everyone when they say they have had enough of the sitting around. You can only watch so much TV and DVDs , just cant wait to get around normally again.
I was told when the plaster comes off, i will have to have physio to help me to walk. I cant wait for the time when i can walk to the shops again, go swimming, and go up and down the stairs and make my self a drink without having to ask anyone again. To everyone who has suffered the same injury as myself, please dont give up, i havent.

I know how you feel Victoria. Although I have splurged and rented a wheelchair along with getting crutches.....
I also had a very bad break that the surgeon said was the worst she had seen.....both sides- 2 screws on the inside bone and 7 on the outside plus a plate, wires and coral......
This happened Oct 26th and surgery was the following day. Cast removed on Dec 14th but no weight bearing until today.....and it is supposed to be featherweight. My sister (nurse) says pretend an egg is under my foot. This lasts for 2 weeks then I head back to the doctor and then I hope physio. Asked if I could do range of motion exercises and was told no. I do lots of leg lifts so my thigh is somewhat retaining muscle.
As I have rheumatoid arthritis (one of the things that caused my spongey bones) and have had major foot surgery in the past, I am looking forward to seeing what I end up doing for physio. Am very active with walking and gardening (have about 3000 sq feet of gardens which I maintain almost totally on my own) plus I work full time and travel a lot for both business and pleasure. Lucky enough to be able to work from home- but no travelling just conference calls.
Glad to be able to read these posts.....any hints as to the physio involved.....they have me at a top of the line sports clinic- thank god!

Hi everyone, I broke my ankle on February 9, 2010 I broke my ankle in two places which one bone was the fibula . I have five screws and a plate from my surgery I had the following week after. I was place in cast soon after the surgery. It was the worst feeling in the world having to depend on everyone to do everything for me. I was placed in another cast on March the first, which was more painful. I stop using medication that I was prescibe because of the constapation as one of the side effects from the medication. March the fifth teen was when I finally got out of a cast and enter a moon boot. When I first put the boot on I could not bare weight so the Doc told me to gradually try to bare the weight and nix the crutches. I was also going to therapy (Is the best excerise your ankle can recieve)which help the pain and the mobility in my ankle. I am currently walking with a limp but i feel much better and see a lot of progress. I will keep in touch everyone!
Broken Ankle and Fibula
2nd Jul '10, 8:01pm
I dislocated my ankle, broke my Fibula, and tore all ligaments in my ankle on May 19, 2010 while pumping gas! I tripped over the hose and when i put my right foot down i only remember my toes facing my bum! I had surgery same day and spent the night in hospital. When I was released I had a plaster cast and then received a fiberglass cast after 2 weeks. Just received my air boot and it's been 6 weeks now. I am starting to put a little pressure but am afraid! I felt like I had an electric shock when I put more pressure. Not sure if it's a nerve or what! Has anyone had this issue???
