Hi,
I have recently broken both my ankles in a climbing accident in the Alps. I snapped the bottom of the right tibia off in the right and shattered the heel (8 fractures in all) and fractured the 1st and the 3rd metatarsals in the left. I have screws in the right now but nothing in the left.

Can anyone give me any advice on how long it will be until I can walk unaided again? I have browsed the forums for a while but can only find info regarding one broken ankle. I know I have to be in the right cast for six weeks and that I cannot put any pressure on the the left for 2 months.

If anyone has any experience of fractures in both ankles I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Chris

wow it feels better knowing i'm not the only one, but i feel bad knowing what ur going through right now. I broke both my ankles in a car accident on Jan 15th 2009. I was in a cast for two weeks, then i was non weight bearing for 3 months. so pretty much i was glued to my wheelchair for the whole 3 months. my right foot had more damage then the left but the doc said i shattered both feet extremely bad, he had never seen an accident like mine. i have pins screws and plates too.after my 3 months was up and it was time for me to start walking i broke down and cried cause i was scared and so stiff and sore, i truely felt handicapped and knew i had hard work ahead of me. it's true the more u walk the better it gets and going to therapy and doing all the proper excercises to regain movement in your ankles back really is important. I am just starting to really stretch my ankles everyday atleast 3 times a day. i wish i would have done it sooner. i sometimes walk with a slight limp because my right foot has less movement. it is still painful when i walk especially when i've been sitting for a couple minutes then have to work through the stiffness and pain again. I still can't run and jump yet, well actually i can jump i did it in therapy on a trampaline(spell check) but too scared to try it at home on the floor. I also still can't squat all the way down yet because of my restricted movements. any questions you can email me at cause i don't know how often i will be on this blog site, i usually don't blog. but good luck and i send my blessings on your recovery. just don't try to walk before instructed by your doc. oh yeah and if you have any nerve damage like i did in my right foot, it's a pain in the ass i know, that pins and needle feeling will go away but then you'll go into that achy stage. i still haven't regained the feeling in my bottom foot yet and still feel some form of discomfort there too.
