Was wondering if anyone had achieved positive results in minimising joint pain with this supplement whilst still playing competitive sports, and if so which brand did they find to be most effective?

i tore my medial meniscus a while back so started to take glucosamine to promote recovery & repair. so far its been good & got the all clear last week (injury happened about 2 n a half months ago). luckly the tear was in a good place of circulation so was able to heal & as a consiquence i did not require surgery. am still taking it & seems to be good. ive been using the Health Perception (high dosage) with Chondritin.

Glucosamine - GOOD

I've used it for over 2 years now, more as a preventative rather than a cure, as my father was diagnosed with osteo-arthritis when he was 50 & as it is hereditary, I thought that I should take steps now rather than later. D
A running friend who needed keyhole surgery to clean up his knee has taken it for over 3 years & is fine. )
I take 2 x 500mg tablets on most days but miss a few to keep my body guessing. ?
I just buy supermarket own brands, just as good as others. roll

My concerns with a number of generic brands of supplements are with their respective bioavailabilty. A reliable source regarding glucosamine is Dr. Jason Theodosakis, http://www.drtheo.com/ There are many biochemical interactions that can influence OA within the body, perhaps a consult with a good Naturapath may be of assistance as well?

Hello there.
I must admit i have used them and i swear by these tablets. I had a huge problem with my knees as i use to run long distances and with heavy loads. A physio told me to try them as a last option. She said it might work. She actually said that something like 80% of people that use glucosamine see huge improvementsas i t helps cartilage regrow and repair.
Anyway after i take the tablets if there is any pain the glucosamine eases the pain down a lot. I take them daily and they keep my knees in good condition.Hadnt had any pain for a long time.
It might work for you as well mate.

Try getting Holland and Barrets brand. They seem to be better and they can advise you a bit as well

According to the research, as an acute treatment a dosage of 2000-3000mg of glucosamine/chondroitin sulphate is sufficient.

As ongoing, it should be done for 3 years at a mainatenance dose of 1500mg.

Hi, I was looking at some research (which I canprobably dig out if necessary) which suggests that Glucosamine is little better than placebo for mild pain, but is effective in moderate to severe pain. i take it because I had to have a back operation and this affected my knee position while exercising and I thought I might find some benefit. I take a mixture of Glucosamine and chondroitin (Holland and Barret) and although it doesn't seem to stop me injuring myself :( , I seem to be more resilient (which is probably why I push myself further) My osteopath recommends A preparation by ?Everflex, which also contains Devil's Claw, coz she reckons that this reduces inflammation and glucosamine/chondroitin effectiveness is reduced in inflammatory conditions (something to do with blood supply) - I don't know if she's right, but she is gorgeous and does me a power of good.

My understanding of the literature is that the effects of glucosamine/condroitin is fairly inconclusive..

Apart from the following

- little or no evidence to suggest supplementation can rectify damage that has already occured......

- However their is some to say that supplementation can potentially deccelerate or prevent further cartlidge degradation

The reserach has Glucosamine as a 'not definate' supplement. It is outside of the top supplements like creatine, caffeine, bicarb etc However, it is one of the named supplements that may offer a benefit.

I have personally used 3000mg of Glucosamine with 2400mg of Chondroitin per day and had great benefits. I snapped my ACL about 5 years ago and ever since have had very bad knee problems/pain. WIthin weeks of using this product I find the pain significantly subsides.

You can also combine it with MSM but the research there is FAR less.

You can get some good deals on the net, the website in my signature is one of the cheapest places around for supplements so take a look there if you want :)
