Little Maisy

Hello,

I really, really need some advice.

Just before Christmas, my right SI joint "went out" and I had it manipulated back into place ....

I am now in a real mess ....

1. When I stand in bare feet, my left hip hangs lower than my right.

2.I know both feet are badly overpronated so have been issued with some arch supports. The left arch support also has a small wedge as I was told my left leg was 1/4 inch shorter than the right. (Although I don't think my legs were measured properly and I don't know whether this is a 'true' difference or not ?!?)

3. When I walk, my right side seems to do all the work. My right gluteus medius is really massive and tight and my lower back muscles are really tight. On my left side, it feels like my muscles are wasting away.

4. When I sit down, I get sciatica down my left leg. I have been told this might be piriformis syndrome ?!?

Any help or advice much, much apprecaited as I'm getting quite scared this will never get sorted out ....could there still be a problem with my hips / SI joint ?

Thank you
x Amanda

Hi Amanda,
Sounds exactly the same as me but im not as bad!!

Ive been to see one of the top physios in the country and the problems around my SIJ reflect directly on my feet and foot strike when im running.

It does sound like the SIJ wasnt put back properly for a start, I could almost guarrentee it. Mine popped out because of excessive over pronation which caused and internal rotation of my leg on every foot strike. Because of that I had a number of muscles trying to compensate for that, groin, sartorias, rec fem, TFL were all working and tightening overtime. They became very painfull. The main culprit of that was a weak glute medius which allowed the excessive inward rotation (or became weakened because of it)
My action plan was to strengthen/activate the glute medius, have a look on youtube on how to do it but start small and build up.
Get my SIJ sorted/located, the stronger glute medius would help to stop this coming out again.
And dont use orthotics. Some may disagree but ive found them to be a bit useless and over painfull. When you put and orthotic in your shoe the orthotic pushes up into your arch even when you are not foot striking. When you get a proper pair of over pronating trainers to suit you then the sole of the shoe will mould into the arch rather than push into it.
Also have a look on exercises to strengthen the arch. I dont know how good they are but worth a look.

You will absolutely get this sorted. Are you in the uk?

Hope this helps

Ben

Thanks Ben !

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply - it is much appreciated.

I am in the UK - live in West Yorkshire !

What makes you so sure the SI joint wasn't put back in properly ? I have to admit, this is really playing on my mind as something obviously isn't right, but I don't know whether it's muscle or joint related and no-one (no matter how much money I pay them !) seems to be able to tell me !!! I've had the SI joint looked at by a few people, but they all say it's OK - however, the two joints do not feel the same to me - there's like a sort of bony lump on the right one that went out !?!?

So far ...I've been stretching out my tight left hip flexors like a crazy person and this problem and the groin pain is not as bad now.

I've still got all my other problems though PLUS it's been discovered that my right hip "drops" as I walk ...

I'm a total mess but am trying to take heart from some other similar posts on this forum. I'm still doing all the physical activity I can manage in a bid to strengthen all my bum / hip muscles / abs etc.

I just don't know what else to do !!!!!

Thanks so much for your reply and words of encouragement !
