Help from anyone please.

This is not stopping me training at the moment but worry it is something I should not be ignoring.

When I do a calf stretch on one leg I have a sharp pain at the back of my heel/bottom of achilles. If I continue the stretch the pain stays and starts to feel like it is burning.

anyone know what this could be please post a reply.

Many thanks
Darren

I would speak to either a physio or a biomechanist, I cannot offer a diagnosis, but you may well find that you have some form of repetitive strain injury (RSI) and you need to look at :

running technique? or,
stretching technique?
footwear?
running surface? (grass, track or concrete?)
running area? (hilly or flat?)

Massage out the calf muscle

check out the picture at http://www.mindfulness.com/of1.html

This is a way to massage out the belly of the calf muscle.

If the shin is holding and the calf is having to pull against the shin which only partially relaxes, your calves are going to feel it.

This is a way to loosen up the anterior tibialis:

Folklore #3a

See http://www.mindfulness.com/of1.asp. Face the railing. Turn the feet and entire body so that it is 45 degrees to the bar. Place the anterior shin over the bar so that the shin muscle and NOT the shin bone rest on the rail.

If rail is too high, use the middle rail. Slowly make a small circle with the foot and slowly slide the shin down the railing. Do once or twice and then switch, facing the rail but turning 45 degrees in the other direction to do your other shin.

Remember if you go too hard, too fast, too much, you'll only end up causing added problems as your muscle will tighten up even more to protect itself from your intensity. Go for the grace.

Also remember that folklore means that if something doesnt' work for you, give it no power or energy but rather find someone who makes sense and whose folklore works for you.

Hi Darren

I've been getting the same pain when I stretch the calf but not any other time. Been on the net looking for answers but nothing so far. Just wondering how you're doing with it? Did you find out what it was or how to easy it or stop it?

Regards

Prit

Hi Darren / Prit, have either of you worked out what the issue was? I've just started getting the same symptoms and haven't found any explanation from anywhere on the net. I'm very interested to find out what's going on with my heal.

Has anyone got an answer to

Has anyone got an answer to this - I have been experiencing exactly the same pain (when stretching my right calf) and don't know how to treat it.

Thanks

UPDATE

Having posted this originally and not getting anywhere with massage etc I ignored it for months with no difference and then resorted to a physio. I was worried I might be tearing muscles around by achilles when I stretched as it felt a sort of ripping type pain when in a yoga downward dog pose or calf stretching. The physio identified the problem being with the sheath near the tendon and suggested I do a sort of dynamic movement going through the pain and further than I felt comfortable. I was a bit nervous about doing this but within a few days problem completely gone!! Just confirmed how valuable a session with a knowledgeable sports professional can be. Lately however I have had a similar problem which has been diagnosed as more nerve pain in the side of the heel as the movement that triggers the pain is dependant on my hip or back position. This is driving me mad as have had for a month and can't seem to do anything to find exactly where the nerve is pinched. Any help appreciated.

Physio diagnosis was the pinching nerve but trouble locating where. Been trying to do nerve flossing but has not made much difference after about a month.

I get this pinching feeling

I get this pinching feeling in the side of my foot, which was originally diagnosed as an inflamed tendon.

It comes and goes and although it doesn't stop me from playing it does drive me nuts sometimes

Kind Regards
