Augh! I've been fighting this for over 4 years and am tired of it. It has come back and is winning the battle and taking over my life. The pain / tightness ? stiffness is on my left leg, outside area, from the middle of my kneecap to approximately midway down my leg. It feels like a very very tight string. Nothing, nothing northing relaxes it, reduces the pain or can make it comfortable.

I have other pain that is behind my kneecap which the doc says is chrondomilicia and osto arthritis. To describe it seems like nothing but to have it in extreme pain and not be able to describle it is driving me nuts!

Again the doc says "your just in a bad way" really isn't cutting it for me. To be fair it has really gotten worse in the last 6 weeks. Nothing has changed. Any opinions or suggestions on what to do. Steps are out of the questions, can't do them. Long walks or even regular walks, not happening too painful. I'm pretty tough but this really needs to change. Help!

leg and knee pain

hi eaglemom - just wondering what type of physio input you've had. I've treated a couple of injuries like this in the past, especially with hurlers, and found it to be a tight Ilio - tibial band referring pain into the lateral (outside) aspect of the knee. Is it worse going down steps or lunging?, and are you able to squat without your hip flicking out. if the answer is no then i would but a little bet on it being the ITB with corresponding glut' med muscle weakness - get to a physio and see if this rings true when they assess you - hope that helpfull

alittle more infor

Thanks for the insite to this problem. I can't do stairs - if per chance I have to I can only do them one at a time, not normal like. I haven't been able to squat ever, I don't think. Really. I've really been trying myself to loosen up the muscles. I've been on the recumbant bike and tonight can't even walk from the exercise. Tomorrow I'm having a massage and then I've got to figure out this even more.

Again my concern is if I go to my ortho - he'll think either nothing or surgery and frankly I'm confussed about the entire thing. I'm sinply sick of this pain and it ruling my life.

another try

hi again eaglemom,
Really think this is to do with the IT band somewhere the fact you cant do stair or squat rings really true. Try starting with a gentle 1/4 sqaut with knees hip width apart and keep your knees over your toes and not veering off inwards or outwards. x10
to work you glut' med, lie on your side keeping your top hip slightly forwards, bend knees keep ankle together and open your knees apart a little way (like a clam opening)Make sure your hip doesn't roll back when you do it x10

Next to stretch out that itb - get the masseus to work around the outside of your knee and hip on that side, then a good stretch is lying on your back cross bad leg over good and place the bad heel by your outstretched knee, take hold of bad knee and gently pull 5second hold x 3. do all x2 a day for a week and see how you go. If that not work then defo go back and see ortho.
hope this helps

Eaglemom,

I've been having some success with self-massage of trigger points, using the book, "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook," second edition, by Clair Davies with Amber Davies.

Pages 178-180 describe pain that could be similar to yours and gives a treatment you can do yourself (or you can see a massage therapist skilled in trigger points).

"Trigger points in the gluteus minimus muscles can cause pain down the back or side of the thigh and lower leg as far as the ankle....Walking is painful."

Trigger points in the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis can also cause knee pain.

I hope this helps.....can't be sure it will. Good luck.

A Unique Perspective On Knee Pain

Eaglemom,

I do believe exercises would be beneficial to help you deal with your knee pain however I do not subscribe to "reps" to resolve the issues that you are dealing with.

The primary reason is your knee hurts and if you look at any muscle anatomy chart there are no muscles around the front of the knee in the area you are feeling pain. What needs to be addressed is the tendons and ligaments.

So in order to work the tendons and the ligaments you need to fatigue the muscles to begin doing the work that will support the knee joint itself.

I have two suggestions for you:

1.) Check out this exercise on YouTube that I made to help specifically for strengthening the knee joint itself.

2.) Next go to this website and download the Special report on Knee Pain which goes over the 5 key components to address pain in your knee long term.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with...

Best regards,
