I believe I strained a muscle on my right hip - running from the right side of my waist diagonally down the front of my hip. It painful, and I am actually walking differently.

I went for a massage on my back then bought a little handheld massager and have been trying to relieve the tension. As a result, I am actually bruised in the area! It has been almost a week and not much has changed. I don't have insurance right now, so I'd like to avoid the doctor.

What is the normal expectation of healing from a strain like this? Is there something else I should be doing?

Thanks so much!

Are you sure its the psoas.....pain from the psoas is commonly felt in the lower back (lumbar) region.... Those hand held massagers are rubbish....I suggest you warm the area with a hot water bottle or simular....lay on your back (in bed or somewhere, draw your knees up and let them drop to the side away from the psoas muscle you want to work (raise your head slightly to contract the abs and the psoas is just off the outer edge(if it is tight it will feel like a salami(sorry ) then massage along the muscle fibres with you fingers locating any tight spots and concerntrating on them after this stretch the muscle out.....(google psoas stretch or find some hear on this forum....
Hope that helps...
You could always seek the help of a good sports therapist in your area.
