hi,
i have been experiencing extremely bad pain in both knees just under the bone and around the patellar ligament. i have seen a GP who told me it was osgood schlatters disease without looking at them. He said it would go away if i stayed off sport for a week. That was last year and i am still experiencing very bad pains and aches, so bad that it really hurts to walk sometimes. When i stop sport my knees get stiff and the pain is worse. I don't know whether it is actually osgood schlatters i have becuase i have been doing some research and normally it is more common boys and girls normally have it 11-13 years old-there is also supposed to be tightness of the quads and i have very strong quads and have experienced no tightness. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem is and how i can treat it? I need to get it sorted out because when i was 13 i won the county championships a year young at 100m and a year after when i developed knee problems my time didn't improve at all. This year i am hoping to get into the English Schools but my knees are preventing me from training at my best.

please help

The doctors identification may be right that you have Osgood Schlatters disease, but you should have it looked at by a physio for confirmation. It could be something else. This does affect mostly early teenage group people, it's unusual for to have this problem after mid-teens.

Rest is only a part of the answer; appropriate stretching is critical of the whole leg, not just the quad (hamstrings as well). If it is Osgoods and it deteriorates, the ligament may detach from the shin, requiring surgery. Have it confirmed properly. There are also exercises around to help prevent Osgoods. I would consider a recovery from Osgoods would be about 2-3 months.
