I have had knee pains on on and off for about 2years and although numerous trips to the physio eased the pain slightly, i still had many sleepless nights because of it. my whole knee would swell up and fill with fluid and the only remedy was keeping ice on it to take the swelling down. I was referred to a podatrist who fitted me with special insoles but the pain is still there when i exercise or stand for long periods of time, anybody know any remedies? would be very grateful

Hi Irish lass. With out a detailed assessment, it is impossible to tell you what it is it could be a whole number of things.

I know from personal experience and from what i have learned with the CHEK Institute is that many people, in particular women, have what is known as a 'gravity pattern'.

By this i mean that they fall victim posturally to gravity, i.e. they tend to have weak glutes and lower abdominal control meaning that they have internally rotated femurs and tend to overpronate during gait, or squatting/lunging etc which puts a lot of stress on the medial structure of the knee. They often have weak vastus medialis and may have an anterior pelvic tilt and a hyperlordosis (increased lumbar curvature).

Without seeing you it is impossible to say whether this is the case, but it might be worth thinking about.

As i say, this is just one example of what can cause knee pain, so this probably wont be an answer to whats causing your problem, but i hope it helops someone.

I hope you feel better soon

James

A simple answer would definately be to get this looked at. If you are getting that much swelling an pain at night, combined with pain when you are standing, sounds like something fairly serious.

Not a real help, but my vote is to go and see someone who will run some tests/investigations. Insoles/othrotics definately won't solve the problem!
