I'm a really active 25-year-old who broke his foot during training last november. I was on and off crutches for four months (bad doctors) and have been trying to get better since april. I feel like I am getting nowhere; pain in the joints that connect the 1st and 5th metatarsals to the cuneiforms and pain in heel (tendinitis?), what they call general disuse soreness. There's no swelling, just a lot of discomfort. I've built up over the past 2 months to running about 8.5kph for 30mins on a treadmill but it doesn't really feel right still. My orthopeodic guy says another six months - anyone have any advice on strengthening exercises or healing this foot in general - thanks, arrrrgh! :(

I had a bad stress fracture in one of my ankle bones when I was in college. They are very frustrating because everything feels normal, and you feel like you should be able to exercise. I remember that the first time I started back into running, everything seemed fine for several weeks ... until the I felt the same sharp pain.
Here's my advice: stay off the broken bone as much as you can for a long as you can. Take up swimming (or any other activity that does not put stress on the broken bone). It's frustrating, but there's nothing else for it.
Also, drink lots of milk -- bones need calcium to heal.
Unfortunately, with broken bones, there is no panacea.

Yeah, milk, vitamins and sunlight...
Also, think about getting a neoprene support for the area, (ankle in your case) it will warm the area and increase blood flow to the area, which will help bone synthesis.
They're great tools, I have weak wrist joints and am always getting into trouble after heavy benching or press ups, the supports releive the pain almost overnight.

Absolutely. My orthopeditst prescribed orthotic inserts. Not sure if they helped the healing process, but there was much less fatigue in my legs and feet after I started using them.

self help ideas

you can go the self help way on the orthotics - "party feet" don't know if you have them over with you but they are silicone gel insoles that you wear in the front part of your shoe - they are for women to wear in their high heels to reduce metatarsal pain, but they wrk brilliantly in reducing the shock through the metatarsals.
As for strengthening exercises you need to work at the finer control aspects of your foot,i.e toe scrunches, picking things up with your toes, rolling things with your foot etc, also you need to work on your balance as the proprioceptive feedback will be a little out of kilter.
For balance you should consider, calf raises (both then one legged), balance work on a wobble board, anything really that will challenge the foot to keeping you upright if these are strong then your foot is less likely to fatigue and hurt - just don't fall over!!!!
hope they help - but as others have said the body heals when the body heals, you can help it support it but at the end of the day it decides on it's own - sorry!!!!!
