Can anybody help?

I am a keen rugby player but for the last few seasons and the beginning of this one I have been plagued by muscle cramps during matches.

These usually occur late into the second half, but on saturday I got severe cramp in my calf after only 20 minutes and had to go off.

I know that it is important to stay hydrated and take on board fluids and electrolytes, in the form of isotonic drinks (lucozade etc) but I have done this without success. I have also tried other alleged cramp remedies like taking magnesium, but it has made no difference.

I actually think that on Saturday I may have taken too much lucozade in an attempt to stop cramping, which messed up my fluid/electrolyte ratio even more.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Used to have this problem playing football, I stopped playing and 3 years later when I resumed I no longer got the problem.
It was a major problem as my calves would go pretty much every game towards the end of the 2nd half - I was told that you can get salt tablets/supplement or something along those lines from your GP to help with the problem, try and make an appointment with yours.

Limit the sports drinks and stick to water. Try taking potassium the day before you play. Bananas and watermelon are good for potassium or you can get it in pill form. Also, any drink with caffeine can dehydrate you.
