Hi,
I am a 62 year old road runner and have just been diagnosed with age related bone degeneration in the left hip. The advise I have been given is to take up swimming.............I ask you "with tears in my eyes" ????
Anyone out there got any similar problems and ways to get me back on the road. I have been running for close on 25 years and just can't imagine not pulling on my shoes and hitting the road.

It depends how severe the damage to your hip is, at the end of the day everyone gets age related bone degeneration, it's just much more advanced in some. The reason they've advised swimming is because it's a non-weight bearing exercise, putting less stress on the joint. However it's still important to maintain a good muscle base around the joint which can be done through specific hip stabilising exercises. The stronger and more stable a joint is, the better protected it is. As for road running, the pounding is not going to make your hip any better, but if you strengthen it enough you can minimise any further damage. Although you may have to cut down the amount you run!
A physio should be able to help you out with specific exercises.
