Please Help re: Creating arches for flat feet

Hello,

I play football and get pains on the insides of me knees. I have been told I have flat feet, these are causing the knee pain, and to solve it I need arches created by either footwear insteps, muscle exercises or surgery. I am booked to see a physio in a months time but am desperate to know whether I can still play next season and the physio (understandably) won't answer any questions until I see him.

Please, does anyone know the answers to any of the following questions:

During any of these three treatments, would I still be allowed to play?
Even if I was allowed to play, would it not be very painful if I had to use the footwaer instep method? It seems impossible to me to run properly with a big wedge in my boots.
How long do these treatments take to work?
I have been told I may have to alter my whole running style - how long will this take?

I would be extremely grateful to anyone with any answers to the above, or any other information of use. Thank you very much.

For lower limb disorders and gait analysis go see a podiatrist, all depending how bad your feet are they may be able to make you some orthosis there and then, find one that does biomechanical assessments which include gait analysis.

The orthosis should be made to fit your foot ware, I have a set that I use all day for work and for training, it takes a little while to adjust but once you have you will not realise that they are there until you forget to ware them.

hope this helps some,

Have a good un, cheers John Murphy

Thanks John

John Murphy,

Thank you very much for your reply - this has pleased me a lot to know that I can run and play wearing the insteps and (after a while) not notice they are there.

Looks like I will be able to play football next season after all!!

Thanks again,

Stephen Dow

mate I weight train in mine, get the Podiatrist to make sure you can get the orthosis in your football boots, the guy that owns the clinic where I work treats a lot of footballers (pro's).

think of it as a matter of timing, your gait cycle takes a certain amount of time, the orthosis alters that time by bring the surface up to meet your feet so your feet operate on the ground at the optimum time (position) hope that makes some sort of sense. :?

should make you more efficeint therefore faster have more endurance etc according to your training

get to some one good and all should be well. :D

Have a good un, cheers John Murphy

The other thing I would incorporate into your training is some barefoot running on some grass at a park. I am flat footed and get terrible aches in my lower limbs. I started to split half of my time running barefoot and it has strengthened all of my muscles in my legs and feet. I still need the orthotics when I run in shoes but the barefoot running has made a huge difference for me.

Thanks again John Murphy and Mike (MJS)

Thanks for your help guys, very much appreciated.

Some good links on going barefoot: (they may seem a bit over-the-top, but there is some good science here, and several of these articles are written by podiatrists, so just keep an open mind, and then you are welcome to try to dig up some conflicting viewpoints -- post back here if you find any)

Please Help re: Creating arches for flat feet

Hi,

I've only just discovered this message board and have so far found it fascinating. I've actually come on here looking for the answer to a different question (which will be in a separate post) but saw this one and was interested.

I've been told for many years that I have flat feet, by a doctor and a friend of a friend who is a podiatrist. Both of these people saw no reason why I should unduly worry about it as it was causing no discomfort. The only noticable side effect is about two or three twisted ankles a season (I play football by the way).

However over the last six months I've noticed that I ache more than I used to when I've played football/been running or training. I must admit I put this down to the advance of age (I'm 31) and as it's nothing chronic I just live with it.

Having read this thread though I'm starting to think that it's my flat feet :( Quick aren't I

How do I know when aches and pains are age cathing up with me or if it's something more specific????

Cheers

There are many different forms of exercise that can be done to rebuild arches, but the problem usually relates to our poor foot habbits, in the sense that we weren't designed to be walking in shoes and on flat surfaces.

The best system I have seen so far is a Canadian company called barefoot science that produces an orthotic that seems to rebuild the medial and transverse arch. It does this quite effectively through noxious stimulus. The only down side to them so far is that they tend to overload the higher CNS centres with nociceptive input that sometimes creates other problems initially and they tend to not create any change within the lateral arch, sometimes even making it worse.

I would suggest starting with a rehab system (such as the aforementioned, or a specific exercise program) and then have fully flexible orthotics created that provide support to all 3 arches. Flexibility is important to allow maximum proprioceptive input into the feet. For this reason, they should also have as minimal amount of shock absorption as possible.
