Possible mild scoliosis advice needed

I think I have mild scoliosis, as i naturally stand with my shoulders slumped slighty forward. I have noticed that my dad does it too.


I was wondering what i could do to treat this problem, as it seems as if I slouch nearly all the time.


I am currently trying to do a lot of back strength work to help imbalances between my chest and abs and back. Working towards being able to lift the same amount with my back as I do with my pecs.


I think I also have some sort of material brace that I could wear to hold my shoulders back, but I was unsure of this, as I want to actually correct the problem and not rely on a brace to make me look like i am standing correctly.

What you are describing does

What you are describing does not sounds like scoliosis, the link below shows 2 types of scoliosis.

If your problem was spinalit would seem more like you had a Kyphotic spine, see link.

However, it may simply be a weekness in the shoulder retraction muscles and a possible tightness across the pectoral area.


Simply correcting the muscle imbalances, stretching the tight muscles and making a conscious effort to keep good posture should help.....if the problem is not spinal that is.

Hi Joe,


If you are as concerned as it sounds about your spine, get it checked out by a doctor or physiotherapist who may be able to advise you on the best course of action. What you describe does indeed sound like a kyphosis, as a scoliosis tends to curve sideways rather than as you have explained.


If your kyphosis is fairly small, there is lots that can be done to address this and if appropriate prevent it getting any worse. This can sometimes be hereditary to a certain extent, but if you are concerned always get it checked out.


As you yourself have already stated, resolving the actual problem is probably going to be better for you in the long term as opposed to braces and whatnot which might not address the actual problem, and could even cause further problems.


When you say you are trying to lift the same amount with your back as you do with your pecs, how do you mean?
